Rabbits Have any of you had your Yorkie catch a rabbit? Ours were airborne last nite and the rabbit hit the fence twice and finally found refuge under our playhouse. What would the Yorkie do with the rabbit? Play? Kill? Eat? I have no idea. Please somone, enlighten us. |
It depends on the Yorkie. Scruffs used to try to chase my rabbit (who now passed away), but eventually he got used to them. I still had to supervise 100% of the time but he would mostly ignore him. I don't think he would have ever killed my rabbit he just liked to chase (much like our cat, who chases Scruffs back). |
i know gatsby would kill it he and my moms pug teamed up and killed a squirrel i do not even let gatsby in the room if the bunny is down when i got the guinea pig he bit its face |
Either the rabbit died of a heart attack or Bubba killed it, brought it in the house and refused to give it up. He was so proud of his prize. |
i guess it depends on the dog. my dog is super friendly with my bunnies, the only reason i don't let them play together unsupervised is because i am afraid the bunnies might hurt milu. i have some pix of milu and my bunnies in my album, there are also some pix of them here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...-bloopers.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...-bloopers.html enjoy! p.s. again, please be careful with the bunnies, it really depends on the dog what they will do with a bunny. my dog grew up with these bunnies. |
Chloe doesn't have a chance of catching any rabbits that wonder into our yard...she may think she's fast , but she is not nearly fast enough :D Sydney on the other hand is fast as lightning. BUT while she goes CRAZY when she sees one ...I don't think she wants to actually kill it. She has caught up to many rabbits and slowed down a bit to give it a chance , almost like the chase is her fun. She has had plenty of chances to grab on , but she never has ( she has knocked a few around , but never bit one) I really think she just likes chasing it and winning :) Her stuffed rabbit toys on the other hand , she DESTROYS! |
I forget how old Kacee was now. I think she was about a year old, when she found a baby rabbit in my mums. I panicked, because I didn't know what it was she had bitten until a heard and saw that poor little baby rabbit hollering as it was running away from that crazy yorkie. I looked down on the brick next to the mums and there was a piece of skin with fur attached about the size of a quarter. Poor little bunny. That had to hurt a lot. So, yes, every time she sees a rabbit the chase is on. Good thing her yard is fenced. My neighbor used to have 3 yorkies. Just one still living. One of them actually caught a small rabbit and killed it. I'm not sure which was bigger - the lil rabbit or her yorkie!:D |
just becareful, yorkies were bred to kill rats way back when in the mines... so its in their nature... just like my two dachshunds, they think they can climb trees and get the squirls ... they are so funny though when they try ... |
My breeder told us she once found her Yorkies killed a rabbit and a pigeon. We live in an apartment so Sandy has no chance to hunt rabbits... unless he wants to chase after the hares (we live nearby to a nature park), I doubt he would kill one because they're bigger than he is. :D |
I know my dogs go crazy when they know one is or has been in the yard. My dogs are kept on leashes, so they wouldnt have the chance to chase a rabbit, but I know they would if they could. I dont think they would kill it though. |
We have a pet rabbit (chardi) and Lexi loves him they play all the time together...but maybe because the rabbit is much bigger then Lexi:confused: Hugs Cheryl & Lexi |
My Yorkie, Charity, wondered off when I was taking her out (I know, I should have had her on the leash) and when she came running back and had a baby bunny in her mouth. She was so proud of her catch, but unfortunately when she caught it she crushed it's rib cage and one of the rids had come through the skin. It died in my hand, poor thing couldn't have been 3 months old. Although Charity had killed the little bunny, she was only following her instincts, so I really can't get mad at her. |

Ginger has killed several rabbits and has eaten them too, especially the young/small ones. She has killed and partially eaten several rabbits and birds. She bites them through the head and kills them, then starts eating them. |
I think Jackson would go in for the kill unfortunately. He gets quite obsessed, has a lot of prey drive. We have a bunny or maybe babies living under our pool house, there was a good 3 days where Jackson was out there, just staring, stalking, circling, waiting for it to come out. I couldn't get him inside without physically going out and getting him, even if I had chicken or cheese in my hand which.. he will always come for food, he's pretty much a food freak. So yeah he's obsessed. And when he's gotten a chance to chase them, he's extremely fast and determined, but has yet to catch one. My dads JRT has killed a few baby bunnies and it always makes me sad, even though it's their instinct. |
