Neutering and Teeth removal Hi everyone I picked up my puppy (7months old) from the vet's office today after leaving him there yesterday for neutering. Apparently they removed 6 baby teeth from him as well. I'm somewhat upset and surprised that they did not call to notify or even ask me about the baby teeth removal. Recently his baby teeth have been falling out by themselves so I don't know why the necessity of their removal. Is this something vets do commonly during the spaying or neutering process? Yes. This is pretty much standard procedure for Yorkies to have any remaining baby teeth removed at the time of Spay/Neuter. The baby teeth will not always fall out, therefore causing double rows of teeth. Which further inhibits the growth of bacteria due to food particles being trapped within the double rows. Your Vet did the right thing by removing the teeth, just probably should have mentioned it. I don't know if you feed hard kibble or soft food but if you do feed hard kibble you may want to soften it a bit with water for a few days/1 week to give the gums time to heal. I've also had one of mine poopy some blood that was ingested after the teeth removal. All things to keep an eye out for, but more than likely you baby will be just fine! It's very common, and actually a good thing. Many times the baby teeth do not fall out on their own, and that means putting you pup under anesthesia again, which is risky. Might as well take care of it when they are already under, and only take the risk once. I intend to let them pull any that might not have fallen out when I get Jezebel spayed. |
Your vet, totally, did the right thing, except for the lack of communication...Better under anethesia, once, instead of twice...As Mardelin said, yorkies are notorious for retaining teeth...My little Apple had her top canines at 12 months, when I had her spayed...They were so tight, and the roots were so long, I wonder if they would have EVER come out, and that's not a good thing for their mouth...Be thankful your vet did this, and ask him/her to communicate w/u about all details of procedures in the future... |

It's not uncommon the have teeth removed at spay or neuter. Your vet should probably have discussed this with you prior. Hot Rod had 14 teeth removed. I knew he needed some out just didn't know how many until it was all done. He was getting double rows of teeth. Hope your boy is feeling better today. :) |
I had my Sophie fixed and they took the baby teeth too, she wasn't loosing them like she was supposed too. Not telling you would have upset me too, but at least they got it all done with only having to put her under once! |
