Need advice So we started puppy classes with Ozzie on Monday. I am so excited because I think it is really going to help. We did a lot of walking and sit, walking and sit. I was embarrassed because he was the only one trying to run crazily away from us. Well while he did that he would "cough" and sound like he was choking but just kept on pulling. I kept looking at the teacher and she kept on telling me that Yorkies were known for that and he was fine. Ok, well maybe he is fine? but I'm not fine with it because I feel SOOO bad. We use a harness from petsmart and we thought that was suppose to be better than a collar. Does anyone have any suggestions on the kind of harness to get? and where to buy them? Is this okay that he is doing it or is our teacher wrong? Tell me I am over exaggerating. |
Yorkie puppies do like to pull on their leashs but once you leash train him to walk next to you it should stop. You might want to check out the training forum on this site. Others have had to deal with the leash training issue and they post good advise on that form. Would love to see pics of your little guy :D |

Collar's should never be used on a Yorkie for walking purposes. Yorkies have delicate throats and yes they cough or honk when stress is put on their throats, hence no collars. Any harness which is away from the throat area is fine. A puppia harness is great as well. Watch that cough. If it happens once in awhile it's ok, if it happens quite frequently I would have it checked by your vet. Some call it reverse sneezing which is ok but it in some cases it can become a collasped treachea leaving the dog gasping for air. Yours sounds like reverse sneezing and yes Yorkies have a tendency of doing this. |
Lexi will pull until she chokes too, so she wears a harness. I tried to find a photo of the one I use but was unsuccessful.. It is very similar to this one: Amazon.com: Fashionable Houndstouth Large Car... and has soft padding on the inside. I would personally recommend a harness for any small dog. Their necks are fragile, and walking with a collar can cause a collapsed trachea. |
Yorkie Traits and Quirks Coughing or "hacking" as we call it. Bella does this when she gets excited. When we return from an absence or when she meets new people or animals. She will often hack at these times. Maybe your furbaby is just excited to be around the other puppies. We always use a chest harness on Bella at all times. Just be patient and you'll be okay. Bella was a star pupil her first 3 classes. Then the last two clases she just wandered around and refused to do any of her behaviors. Oh well, Yorkies are individuals and that's why we love them so much. |
Callie does this when she pulls to hard on the leash and she has a harness on as well not sure I have any suggestions just wanted you to know that I know what your talking about and that my yorkie does the same thing sometimes. |
Thanks for the advice... like I said we already have them on harnesses but I was hoping to find a better one. We are looking into the Puppia harnesses...I just would feel more comfortable...I just hate hearing him sound like he is in pain...Thanks! |
I forgot...here are some updated pics...cooper is in the first two pics (18 weeks) and Ozzie is in the last two pics (21 weeks). Ozzie is the one going to puppy classes. We had originally thought we would take one dog one week and the other dog the next but after our first class we found out that Ozzie might need more training than we thought. And we thought he was the "better behaved" one. :) I love my boys! |
ok..ok...sorry again...thought I attached pics but it won't let me....I will try to attach them in my profile...sorry |
