When should a puppy have their 1st haircut? I've been reading threads about grooming and was wondering when is the best time for a first cut? I don't want Alfie to have the long hair look. At the moment his hair is a bit curly and he looks so cute. I want him to stay with the short cute look. :) |
well Zoey will be 4 months on the 16th and she just had her first cut. I dont know if theirs actually a time you supposed to wait but her hair was getting so long and its very very thick, and i couldnt keep the matts and tangles out. So we just got her cut on saturday. She looks soooo cute and tiny now hahahha. |

I think it is all up to you. If you think the dogs hair is getting to long for your taste then go ahead and get a puppy cut. I know adults dogs that go to the groomer every 3 months some only twice a year. And as a puppy their hair all grows differently. Bailey only got her first hair cut at 8 months. ( I do admit is was overdue..lol) goodluck with everytrhing. :) |
You should wait untill the shots are done. Pups can catc h kennel cough and stuff at the groomers |

Yep. Wait until they have their shots. Plus some groomers require that the pups have certain shots before they will even schedule an appointment. I think its good to get them used to grooming at an early age whether have a lot taken off or not. There are certain areas that reaklly should get addressed early and often such as the pads, saniity area and ears. Mine first was around 4 1/2 months when I took her in for the first time. I groom my own now but I would start yours soon provided your pup has alll shots in place. |
I must agree with the last two posters: when I asked my groomer of choice when I needed to bring the pups in the first time, he told me to wait until they'd had all their shots. Even if they didn't need a true grooming session at that time, they would be introduced to the essentials: bathing, ear trimming, nails. And they wanted to know that it was the first time so they'd schedule EXTRA time. They feel that the first time sets the experience in the pup's mind, and they wanted it to be fun, playful - enjoyable - something that the pup enjoys instead of quivering in fear over. Puddie has a thick cotton coat ... he gets trimmed like a round-headed teddy bear. Bella has a long, silky coat. They like doing her, because most folks keep their Yorkies in shorter styles, so they get to play with her hair. I like the way they think: a pup should think that going to the shop is an enjoyable thing. They get massaged while all soapy ... they laughed when Puddie actually fell asleep on them :D. THAT's the way a grooming experience should be! |

Fergie had her first grooming when she was about 5 1/2 months. Her hair is not all that thick so we can get away with not taking her in as often as others. Her last haircut was back in November so I'll be bringing her in again probably in February. |

I can see what you mean by the first injections being too early and therefore the subsequent ones are too. Most puppies have had the 2nd injection at about 12 weeks. Some puppy classes start from 12 weeks and a puppy has to have had both injections prior to that. Its interesting how our countries do some things so differently. Also we don't have groomers in the petstores like I gather you do. |
