Getting dressed and putting in bows Hi all. I have a 6 month old female Yorkie (Lienkie) and can not for the life of me get her used to putting on something nice like a dress or coat for winter. When i come near her with it or when I'm just showing it to her she runs away and hides. lol. When i tie her hair back out of her eyes she manage to get the elastics out to. She rubs her head agains the floor, carpet or just trying to get it out with her paws. One two three and it is out. any suggestions???? |
Just keeping trying shell give in eventually it's just somthing they have to get used too Kingston hated his boots for the first 3 weeks and now he's coming around lol |
LOL. That sounds like how my Belle used to be. I just kept putting things on her...clothing and bows and eventually she got used to it and stopped fussing so much. It doesn;t even phase her now. ...but it did take her a few months. :) I started putting bands in the puppies hair from the start now to get them used to it earlier. I don;t leave bows in because i'm afraid they will rip them off and eat them :) The bands I don't worry about as much. So far we've gone from the pups keeping their bands in for a minute to about an hour at 5 months :) Good luck. |
Start out with something soft like a T Shirt or fleece. Your pup just needs to get used to wearing something and will not mind after awhile. Daisy still prefers a little vest rather than a frilly dress. For topknot, I use a soft covered band for every day. |

I had this problem with Ruby and Villette on here gave me the best advice. When you get a dress on her, make over her with lots of praise! We would tell Ruby she was a "pretty girl" (along with other phrases) over and over again. It didn't take long until she would prance around the house, showing off her dresses for us. |
Distraction might help also. As soon as you get her dressed grab her favorite toy and play for a few minutes so that she forgets about the clothes and bows. |
Zoey use to be the sameway. She still fights me some. Like everyone else has said just keep doing it. Shes coming around. She now sits still for groomings and baths, and even clothes. Just working on the hair. =] |
Hi Monique, I know exactly what you mean. The trick I use for getting Pixie dressed is I sit her on the floor and I give her a treat and after she is dressed I praise her. Now for putting bows in that is a HORRIBLE task. I sit her in the bathroom sink with a towel in the sink and I put her hair in a bow and it last for about 2 hrs tops. LOL I keep trying hoping she will get use to this! Good luck! |
How I got Jasmine used to the bands was using two instead of one. At first I was just using one to put her hair up with and she would rub her head on the floor and "presto" it was out in a few minutes. Now i make the first pony tail then make another right behind the first one and put the two together. I always make sure I put them up loose enough where there are comfortable for her. It also gives me a great place to attach a clip-on ribbon or barrett between where the ponytails are joined together. This "joined" pony tail never comes out. |

This is a great topknot tutorial: Topknots shared by Linda Grimm and Maria Lelinho starring Rocky! Many Thanks! Make sure you distract her after you've finished her topknot. A Kong or a Busy Buddy Twist and Treat, a bully stick, etc, something to keep her occupied for awhile work great. |
Thanks guys. Really appreciate all your comments. Very good tips, i'm sure to use them all. I sort of got her used to her soft baby vests but the dresses, jerseys and other is a disaster. Very good tip for the "joined" topknot. Thanks for that. Will definitely try that tonight. Thanks again. Have a nice day further. |
omg, I just love to see cuties lean their head to sides, thinking hard~:D Duncan didnt really like clothing and bows either before. Just be pacient and wairt for the right thing to show up. Duncan even cooperates and lifts arms for me to put clothes on and off. Good luck! Quote:

Monique! lol too funny..........Pixie does the same darn thing. As soon as she sees the clothes it is like oh sh** here she comes I am out of here! lol I give her a treat first and quickly put on her clothes. As for bows her hair is so short and I have snap in bows but they are too hard to get out so I am waiting till her hair is longer! |
