Welcome to YT! I don't have any advice as I'm not a breeder. I just wanted to welcome you. I'm sure you will get some good advice on this site. All I know about new puppies is they have to be kept warm. :) ' |

:littleang Make sure they are dry & warm. If the the mom is not on puppy food she'll need that kind of a special diet. Keep on eye on them and send some pics when you have time. :luvu: :yelrotflm :luvu: :yelrotflm :luvu: :yelrotflm |
Congratulations and welcome. You may want to post in the Breeder talk section to get the attention of the experienced breeders here. Good luck! :) |
Oh that is SO exciting...they are being born as you are posting :) Congrats and welcome!!! |
WELCOME TO YT!!! WOW....5 puppies!!!! That is a LOT!!!! You need to know that they do not produce their own body heat for the first 3 days. So make sure they don't stray to far from Mom. Also make sure they don't get stuck under Mom, behind Mom, or tangled in her hair. A mother will take care of them but will not remove them from a potential life threatening situation. The Mom will need to pee frequently and will want RIGHT back in with the pups. Don't let it hurt your feelings, but she won't want much to do with you for the first 3 days. Hopefully you put her on puppy food during her pregnancy. She will need to eat puppy food for as long as she is nursing. Other than you making sure everyone is ok (which is quite often), she will take full care for the first two weeks. Feeding, stimulating to go to the bathroom, and cleaning up the area. Help her with cleaning when you see the opportunity. The pups will not go to the bathroom on their own at first. They can not see or hear. Mom may get pretty messy from delivery, but wait to bath her until tomorrow. Just wipe her off for now....you don't want her to be wet. Her belly will get sticky from the milk....wipe that off when you see it is necessary. Hopefully you trimmed the hair from her teets beforehand....if a hair gets swallowed by a pup it will scream in pain. Hope this helps, I could run on and on. Good luck and keep us posted.....no such thing as a stupid question either, just ask....someone will help you. This site is priceless! |

Julz gave you some very good advice. I might add since you have a large litter and mom size is unknown, that many pups will put a lot of stress her calicum and protein levels . Make sure from this day forward until weaning time suppliment her feeding she needs lots of protein and natural calicum. Feed her normal quality puppy dry food diet with added cottage cheese, yogurt, or goats milk for the added calcium needed for such a large litter, you can also give her 1/2 tums twice a day to help. Also add some chicken, rice, turkey, pasta, chicken broth, boiled or scrambled eggs and any cooked veggies you have on hand (any of these combinations at least 4 times a day) Get some rice baby cereal and again goats milk for when your ready to begin weaning as well as a quality dry puppy food like (Royal Canin baby dog) also some pee pads for training. At about 3 weeks will begin to go potty on their own and mom will stop cleaning up after them. The pups dont want to sleep in it so have an area made up where they can easier wobble over and pee and return to their warm bed, it starts out good habits. When you do bathe your mom for the first time after whelping only bath her in a baby shampoo and make sure her teats are rinsed very very well before blow drying her, dont put her back with the new kids until she is totally dry. The kids should be on a heat pad (on low temp wrapped in a towel) for the first 3-4 weeks you dont want them to catch a cold and be totally free of drafts and air conditioning. Room temp shouldnt be under 72 degrees, where you have them. Finally remember to get their tails docked and declaws removed at 3-5 days. Start vaccinations at 6-8 weeks NO LEPTO! and worming about 4 weeks consults your vet for product and timing. hope this all helps congrats on the new kids |

EXCELLENT ADVICE !!! I COULDN'T SAY IT BETTER MYSELF :bravo: |
When we had the Dane puppies we put them in a rubbermaid tub with a heat lamp on them and just made sure they didnt get to warm. YOu can put a heating pad under a blanket to keep them warm... |
I see that you've gotten some excellent advice. Congratulations on the new litter! Now, start posting pictures! |
