Is your yorkie scared of things? Lily seems to be scared of alot of things....She seemed fine at home. We had gotten her in Sept. and she has went camping with us and did fine. But since we set out for Florida (this week) and she had gotten so nervous...she's seems scared of so much. Like my DH went fishing off of the dock, he caught a fish and she was scared of death of it!!!! I'm really concerned...I don't want her to be so scared of things...and we want to travel and I don't want her to not be comfortable going too. She does fine like when we get to the hotel or if she's in the house. She definelty does not like change!!!! :( What can I do to ease her into things? By the way....I just LOVE her so much and want her with me all the time...I don't want to leave her behind!!!! LOL!!!!:animal-pa |
Well, she is just a youngster yet. The best thing you can do when they are like that is to expose them to all kinds of situations and when they show you they are scared - just pat her on the head and tell it is all right. Do this every time she acts that way. She will probably always be a bit that way, but as she gets older she will be less so. That is the reason to expose them to new things when they are very young puppies. :) |
When I first brought Missy home, I don't think she'd ever had a toy. :( I squeaked on of her squeaky toys and she ran under the bed! It took a few days, but she got over it. :D She is also afraid of the vacuum cleaner, but only when it's on! When it's off, she barks at it and climbs on it like, Take that! lol. I think your little one just needs a little time and she'll be fine!! |
Scared Well this is a funny but when my husband sneezes Jack/Bella run away. they don't like the noise.(ha,ha). And its not just one time Andy is one of the ones who sneezes a couple of times in a row.. And LOUD.. I think they would be use to it by now but it takes me by surprise sometimes.. |
I'd like to empathise to continue to expose her to new things constantly. We want our Razzle to go everywhere with us so yes sometimes he gets nervous but we reassure with our voices - no pets at all - and move onto the next thing. Your baby is how old? Got in september maybe 5 months or so. Sometimes they go through a scared period can be anywhere from 5mths to 9mths old Then you need to be carefull. When Razz was about 7 months all of a sudden and I do mean from one day to the next he got scared about going into my work - walking along Yonge street. He had be coming with me since he was 3months old! I called my breeder and explained what was happening and she said okay for now - for about 3 weeks keep him at home. So I did on the fourth week in we go to work and he walked along Yonge street like he never had a problem! Go figure - Razz so far has flown with me about 4000 miles - gone camping, and hiking through all terrain, been on a ferry boat, been swimming, been to agility, and of course the show rings. We've taken him to pet stores, along our waterfront(busy place with lots of folks, dogs, n bikes, visited other peoples homes, but still sometimes he will shy away from a different noise or environment - and sometimes he will bark like mad too! lol |
I agree, continue to expose her to things, and don't "baby" her BEFORE she acts scared, or you are showing her to be scared. She needs to learn to trust your judgment, and make good decisions herself... she is very malable(SP ~ impressionable~) right now, she could go either way...lol |
Lily is still pretty young, which is when Roxy was the most fearful. There are a couple things I can tell you that worked really good. Booms from fireworks: They upset her some. About a week after the 4th of July some neighbors (about a mile in back of us) set off fireworks. Discovered I could see them through the trees. So went outside where she was barking & upset. Sat on a bench. She ran right to me... her heart pounding through her chest. As the pretty lights showed up in the sky, I'd softly oooow & aaaaahhh & quietly talk about how pretty they were. After a bit, I could feel her heart beats returning to normal. She sat with me quietly & soon acted like she enjoyed them. Thunder doesn't seem to bother her as much since then too. Actually I did the same type of thing w/my 2 boy skin kids when we had those middle of the night storms that woke them up. We'd go sit & watch out the window at all the lightening. Quietly Oooow & ahhhh & wow that was a loud one. Dishwasher: ooooww spooky to her & it is very quiet. So I picked her up & her treat cup, sat on the floor right up against the dishwasher. Everytime she was quiet, she'd get a treat. Talked quietly to her & treat. We sat there for a good 5+ minutes like that. Since then she doesn't even seem to notice when I turn it on. I think the key is to try & find a way of helping her to understand the situation you're in & be reassuring. Be prepared to use your imagination to figure it out. They all seem to have their own things that work & don't work. Try to be reassuring without over coddling. Just calm. The more experiences she has, the better she should get at dealing with new things. Happy travels! |
What a great post! |
My Hutch didn't like sneezes either ~ or hiccups! We took him everywhere from puppy age. He traveled well until he turned 15 -1/2. We are campers, and he decided in his old age that he didn't like campfires. |
Jasmine is scared of the washing machine noise and the crackling noise from wood in the fireplace. |
But, if a Wolf came to the front door she would attack him..........go figure...LOL |
Ruger doesn't like the vacuum cleaner, but most dogs don't. Surprisingly he has done fine with fireworks, fireplaces and the bombs they set off for avalanche control. Still waiting to see how he does with thunder. I don't hold him or do anything special, and I think that makes a difference. I just let him "enjoy" the experience. |
Most of the time if Callie is scared of something I try to show it to her if thats possible like the vacuum she still is scared of it but I have carried her over to it and said look see its not going to hurt you and let her sniff it sometimes she will lick whatever it is and that has worked many times not with the vacuum but with other things. |
Hot Rod is the same way. You can see he wants to go up to things but he's got 3 paws running backwards, lol. He's gotten a bit better--its so funny when he's unsure of something, he run up and bark and then run back and so on. But if he's really protecting mommy, he stands his ground. I don't know what the difference is? lol |
All of our babies are afraid of the fly swater. They have never been hit with it but have seen us swat at flying bugs. :animal-pa Koltrane is afraid of taking the first step to go downstairs :animal-pa Karmy is not afraid of anything :animal-pa Tybee is afraid of going up and down the stairs inside (even the ones used to get on the sofa) however, she will go up and down the stairs outside from one deck to another to get to the pool area. |
Troy doesn't like the vacuum cleaner or my daughters remote control Barbie corvette. Hes still young and I'm still socializing and showing him new things. |
LoL. Peanut is my little scared baby. He is scared of a water bottle when it cracks.. He is scared when I point my finger at him and flick it with my thumb... to the point where he will go hide and shake some where.... I have NO idea where that came from The vacum, but not the broom Fireworks Thats pretty much it for now |
Daisy is scared of nothing except thunder. Gatsby is scared of cooking smells. When ever we cook meals that are a little smokey he runs up stairs and hides in the Yorkie Club House (a space behind a futon that us humans can't easily get to) to shiver in seclusion. Aggression is another issue. Gastby is aggressive towards anything new outside. He will bark at garbage waiting to be picked up, Christmas or Halloween decorations (those with motorized action are the worst), any litter moving in the breeze. Daisy is not aggressive towards anything except the vacuum cleaner when its running; she attacks it so fiercely that we have to put her in lockdown when we vacuum unless one of us can hold her.:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
Wow...they all seem to have some sort of quirk!!! :) Lily's almost 6 months...so I'm really hoping it's just a faze like when our skin kids were at the same age. She's not really too scared of things in the house...it's mostly things outside. We did take her camping when we first got her but than it got cold and she didn't go out much. She just shakes alot when she rides in the car...she's done this since day one...I'm really hoping she'll out grow it. I have found that she'll go into her kennel when were driving but the moment the car stops she has to come out and find where were at! :) Going to take her to the beach this week (if it ever gets warm in Florida!!!!) We'll see how that goes and I'll let you know! Thanks to all your responses! |
I think Quirkiness is in the Breed!! Haha -Gotta love em |
Laci really isnt scared of too much, she actually follows me when I vaccum, but she is terrified of someone with a cane and a walker.. my grandmother has a walker I had to hide it in the closet.. and my daugthers fiances mother came for christmas and she had a cane , she hated that too, just barked and barked and barked till I hid it... |
When we first got Chloe home and took her for a walk she was scared of just about everything outside. She was especially freaked out by a fire hydrant of all things :p She barked , backed up , ran behind me , and was just stunned about it. She eventually got use to everything and now is fine. We just reassured her but tried not to baby her too much ( which was hard :) ) Now she doesn't seem scared of much really , more like freaked out momentarily if something happens , but usually is OK after a few seconds when she fgures out what the thing is that spooked her. The only thing I can think of she seems scared of is the vacuum cleaner :) Sydney doesn't seem scared of anything except the vet  she will whine and cry if we get in the car till we pass the vets office , then she is fine :) I guess she remembers vet=needle ...I'm not sure if I would say she is scared of the vet as much as she dislikes her ( And we have a WONDERFUL vet :)) |
My 10 yr old , Calli is afraid of the rain, thunder, firecrackers, or any other loud sound similar. She knows when it is going to rain, before it starts. She shakes. One storm, she dug through the drywall in the basement and was hiding. I feel bad for her. |
Buddy used to be afraid of being outside when he was a pup. Now, he is the ruler of the neighborhood! He used to hate rides, now he has a spaz attack if you say "ride" because he knows he gets to go. I think your baby will adapt. Just a gentle introduction to things and situations to get acclimated. |
Excellent thread! Yorkies are always the smallest thing in the room, so I think it's natural for them to develop a fear of things they don't understand. It's part of their survival instinct and is actually a good thing. You don't want them investigating snakes and cats and big dogs on their own. That's been one of the biggest challenges I've faced trying to train them. In agility, Eddie was terrified of the teeter-totter because it made a loud bang when it hit the ground. He never really got over that, I think because I babied him too much at first. He's also afraid of fireworks, flopping fish, unexplained noises. ... With Jillie, I've tried to not only expose her to new stuff, but to watch my own reaction when we encounter it. I don't make a big deal about it if I see she's afraid. She sees I'm not afraid, so she gets over it. We're practicing walking over incline boards now, and she's shown some fear. I just pick her up, place her in the middle and let her walk down. No reward for the fear, but a big reward of treats when she does what I want her to do. A trainer once told me not to reassure them by saying "It's OK" when they act scared. She claimed that the lesson the dogs get from that is it's OK to be scared. I'm not sure I believe her, but it's worth keeping in mind as you're reassuring them. I always ask myself "Is it helping?" Often, my answer is no. With a flopping fish, I think I'd just matter-of-factly remove the fish from their view and not say anything. The dog would learn that I've got their back and will take care of the scary stuff. I don't want my dog sniffing slimy fish anyway, so there's no need to waste my time training them to accept it. Good luck! |
Timba is afraid of WIND SHIELD WIPERS he goes crazy if we are in the car and it starts raining... he will freak out once he see's the wipers on.. I can't control him after that he jumps at the window trying to get them to stop.. he will bark uncontrolablly... and I can't calm him down,, so I put him on the floor of the car until he calms down but he just keeps on barking like mad... it drives me crazy ... so I try not to take him out with me when it rains,,,, or when I do take him I always pray that it won't rain today... ;) |
