Is something wrong with my baby? I have posted something similar tp this before, but I just want to know does anybody elses baby do the same thing. Capone always cowards down when someone walks up to him to pick him up or something. He's always done the hunkering down when people approach him. I don't know why hes a very playful happy dog.The last few days when I've been trying to take him out with me he runs away back into the house and tries to hide (It's really annoying because I'm trying to beat the house alarm). Nothing has happened to him that I know of. Today I took him to daycare and the guy went to pick him up and he hunkered down, and all I could think is I hope they don't think I beat my baby. He acts like hes an abused dog sometimes, which is NOT the case or has ever been. Does anybody eles baby do this? |
Some dogs just don't like being picked up. Approaching a dog from the front, which many do, may be intiminating to them, perhaps causing them to back up. You mentioned day care, are you sure nothing happened to frighten him there? Just a thought if this behavior is recent. I never pick Buddy up from the front I always go to his side and pick him up that way supporting his stomach with one hand and his butt with the other. It's not so intiminating that way I read. He never backed away unless he sees a sweater in my hand.:p |
Laci does this exact same thing it drives me crazy because she is well socialized just really afraid or timid of strangers.. she will approach but with alot of caution..only with complete strangers, if you knows you she will jump all over you .. but that cowering thing does make it look like they are beaten.. :eek::eek: |

To the side only, not head-on for Bella Rose Bella hates to be picked up head on. She will stand sideways if you say, "I'm going to pick you up" otherwise she goes backwards if you approach her from the front. She seems much more comfortable with the command and then being picked up from the side. She never backs off, but she will run away if she doesn't want to be picked up at the time. Happens rarely, but it does. |
Bogie is this way also. He is such a loving playfull little guy and will jump all over me when I come in from work, but let me reach to pick him up and he lays flat down on the floor. I call him my little mud turtle cause he squashes himself almost flat when you reach to pick him up. I think it is just in some of these little guys nature to be this way. |
I don't think anything is wrong with your precious furbaby. Zoey is similar... she will back away and make a game of it sometimes but she does want me to pick her up so she will give in eventually. We are working on the come and stay in order to try and eliminate this as it kills my back bending over for soooo long LOL Hi Michelle, Just wanted to tell you that I love your 'quote'!! My Jewels does the same thing and she even does it to us when we go to pick her up. We have never even so much as spoken to her harshly so I have just accepted it is her personality |

It is pretty intimidating to a dog to have someone bending over their head and shoulders. That is what other dogs do when they try to dominate them. All my dogs actually turn around and back up to you when you go to pick them up. I never taught them that, they just do it on their own. |
We call it the "PUP" Pick Up Position :D |
Maggie is very submissive and tends to cower down when in a new situation. Once she knows you though, watch out. lol Hot Rod will greet anyone head on won't mind being picked up but only for a second, then it's back to mommy. I think it just depends on the situation and the day. |

Yes Muffy is the same way. When we first got her she literally crawled to us. She still does the same with new people, but once she gets to know them she's fine! |
