The Cold and Yorkies do not mix!! Just wondering how others are dealing with this horrible cold wheather and their yorkies. I have a yorkie, Dixie and each of my twin daughters each have a yorkie, Teddy and Max. They are all between one and a half years and two years old. It has been bitterly cold and the wind blowing with gusts up to 50mph the past few days. The little yorkies just get so cold within two minutes of letting them outside. I just cannot do it. We are using lots of piddle pads for them. They just do not seem to understand the cold and why they cannot run freely outside like they want to do. We are in Northern Virginia, how is it in your area and how do you do with your little ones??:) |
I dont know how people/yorkies do it... My little guy is almost 5mos old and I cant bare the thought of letting him out. I got him the end of October and he has not stepped foot on the ground outside. It is too cold here in NY. Even when I put his sweater on and bring him in the car with us he shivers for a few minutes. It is way too cold out for these tiny babies :( I have been litter box training him. |
My Callie is 16 pounds so not really tiny and I have been keeping her in sweaters plus she has a doggy door and goes out and comes in when she needs/wants too she never really liked the puppy pads she prefers to do her buisness outside. The wind yesterday and today was scary to her so when I knew she had to go I would say ok go potty and stand at the door and that made her feel safe enough to run out go and run back in. When it snowed my grandpa cleared a little path and a patch of grass and if she was cold she would run out go potty and run back in but sometimes she would stick her face right in the snow lol. |
I live in NE Tennessee and it has been cold in this area. Tonight it is getting in the single digits. Our three yorkies, weights are 4, 5 and 6 pounds, wear coats outside and sweaters inside. They don't ask to go out as often and when they do go outside they potty quickly and come back inside. |
Jasmine and Prissy have always went outside to do their business, now that it is so cold they do their business in record time! |
Chloe and Fiona (especially Fiona) hates the cold but will go out for about 1 min. at a time. This will be Chloe's 2nd winter and Fiona's 1st. It is in the neg. here in IL. tonight and it is very hard on their feet more than anything so we have pee pads, shoes, sweaters, and coats :) but nothing to protect against the slippery ice spots. |
Yes.....very cold in Illinois!! Abby wears sweaters, coats and boots. She has a great little coat. It's called an eskimo coat. Her boots are great too, expensive, but well worth it. Yesterday I found......................are you ready for this? A set that contained leg warmers and a scarf!!!!!:D I am so crazy that, yes...... I bought it. I haven't had time to try them on her though. Ok, you can say it..................I need my head checked. |
Lucy has taken a step backward in her potty training due to the cold and snow. She hates it! But she has never used a pee pad and just shreds it if I put one down. If I go w/her, she'll go out for about 30 seconds and do her business. Poor dogs. Mine have been cooped up in the house for about a week now. It's just too cold to walk them. My Westie especially has cabin fever. We took them for a quick trip to PetSmart just to get them out. My Westie loves to go there but Lucy seemed a bit afraid. |
We are living in Germany out side and a good example it was around 20 degrees today with about 3 or 4 inches of snow on the ground... our solution is that we play dress up... when its time to go outside (we have a yard so we just let her run free for about 5-10 min tops) she puts on a tee-shirt, then her snow jacket, and then her sweat-shirt/hoodie... and she loves it and just runs around the whole time... then also we have a fluffy rug on our door step (which doesnt get snow on it) the for her to warm her paws on or sit on tell its time to come back in incase she getts tired out or cold to soon (but that never happens most of the time she is still running around in circles or eating the snow when I go to let her in... even though she uses the litter box I still think its important for alice to go outside she loves it... if I try and bring her in earlyer than that 5 min... she just runs the other way... she loves the snow and I think she knows she can always warm up later... lol |
2 Attachment(s) I must have a yorkiehusky because mine LOVES the snow, we got another 13 inches here yesterday and even with the high winds and tons of snow she barks at the door to go outside...She is a very strange dog.. she would stay out there for hours if I let her... she sits by the door with ball in mouth barking to get out in the snow, she gallops through it like a reindeer , and she is still a little one only 5 pds.. its pretty funny!! Attachment 304070 Attachment 304071 Maybe she thinks she is Santa Paws:eek: |

Jackson is a SNOW dog, he loves it. He was plowing through 3 feet of snow a few weeks ago. (http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...-blizzard.html) He doesn't mind the cold but he does not like the wind... he just runs outside real quick, does his business and we come right back in. |

OMG she looks so cute. She looks like she has lots of fur to keep her little body warm! :) |
Only one of mine are trained to go outside. Thanks goodness for pee pads with the other two. She has been either holding it extra long and go every 15 minutes because I think hse goes outside and doesn't finish becuase the wind kicks up and almost knocks her over. I've tried to get her to use the pee pads too but she's only done this a couple times. I'm worried she;s going to give herself a UTI :( Have any of you tried that potty patch? I've been going back and forth on trying it. I just don;t want to waste my money. I almost bought one the other day at PetCo but I noticed that the box appeared to have been resealed so that gave me a bad feeling. I was wondering if someone tried, realized it didn't helf and returned it. It would sure be nice to have an alternative for those outside pottiers. Someone else had sent me a link a few weeks ago for another alternative potty patch but it was way too pricey for me....although if i knew it would work i might acutally fork out the $. Its that what if it doesn't that holds me back. |
It was 16 degrees last night and this morning barely 20. Sophie doesn't hesitate to go outside to do her business :p. This is her first real winter and we wondered how she would handle it. She loves running through the snow like a deer. We take her for walks and she wears a harness vest layered with a coat. She also has sweaters and hooded sweatshirts. :animal-pa |
I have a larger Yorkie who loves the outdoor's. It was 16 the other day with wind chills that made my face hurt and eyeballs burn and Buddy was taking his time sniffing for the right place to potty! He loves it outdoors, cold or hot. He knows when he goes we are headed back home and he holds it till the last minute everytime.:( He'll pee 20 times but hold the poop forever because he knows until he goes he's stays outdoors. He's killing me in this cold! If it's raining he'll pee and poop in a minute but otherwise he'll hold out until the last minute. |
My little Cordy hates the cold... he won't go outside, but when he comes in, he'll go behind Daddy's chair and do both businesses..... *sigh* what's a Mom to do for a little 3 pound cold fella? |

Zoey is the same way. Zoey would rather go outside when its cold and snowing then when its warmer and sunny out. Makes no sense to m what so ever. She will climb on the back of the couch and look at the window adn actually bark at the snow falling its soo cute <3 |
We are in KC and will be lucky if we see highs in the teens. GL loves the snow and will play in it even though it is over his back! He will not wear any clothing at all. This morning I think it was 0 or so for our morning outing. His back paw got so cold he started limping. I picked him up to warm it and he was so mad and it hurt that he was trying to bite me. The city will not plow because it is too cold and will not put any sand or salt so we walk on snow covered ice. He will stay as long as I let him. |
My Jewels wont go out in the cold the rain or the snow. She is a spoiled house dog |
Remy does not like the cold, but he seems to be doing OK. With his sweater and coat he seems fairly warm. I've also changed our walks to our sheltered parking garage - we go up all 6 ramps every morning. It is an outside garage, but enclosed so it is a bit warmer and sheltered from the wind. Minimal traffic so we can easily get through in about 15 minutes, usually don't even encounter any cars. As a result, he is getting a little "up hill" exercise everyday and can potty without the wind blowing him over LOL |
It was -4.5 first thing this morning and I certainly didn't want to be in the garden keeping any eye on Alfie but he wont use the pads, he just wants to eat them. He was very good this morning though. He did his pee pee at 6.30am and then went back in his crate and fell asleep for another 45 mins so I got another 45mins too. :) |
Well the snow and frost hasn't lifted from here for the last 2 days, but today my two decided it was a good idea to have an attack of the zoomies outside. Everytime I got them in Rosie would ask to go out, cant refuse as I'm trying to get her to ask to go potty outside, but no she just wanted to tare around. |

Maximo goes for his hour-long walk every morning, even when the temperature is barely 20 degrees. I can't persuade him to wait until the sun warms things up to a balmy 30. Max has a full coat, so he prefers cooler weather. Maybe I should shave him down. ;) |

We ordered the potty patch from Harriet Carter for about $40. We ordered with a friend and I can not recall what the shipping was. As Seen on TV Potty Patch® Mat - The Indoor Dog Potty - A Harriet Carter Featured Product If you decide to try it - I would not waste my money on the replacement liners because they are just the paper piddle pads and they can be purchased for a better price. I can not say if this really works or not. We can not try it right now because everytime we did, Zoey wanted to eat the stray grass strands. These could be deadly in my opinion - if they got wrapped up in her intestine. We still have it and plan to give it a try when she is older for any middle of the nite needs. |
