Couple questions We have just a couple questions that maybe you guys can help with... Our puppies are now 4 months and 4 months 3 weeks....one is 5 lbs the other is 8lbs...we were wanting them to start sleeping with us but we are so afraid of them jumping off the bed...It's not a super high bed but it is not a low bed, I would say more of the high side...Should we be worried? We also have a cat that doesn't seem to be very fond of the pups...she normally hides but we are so afraid that they will get under the bed with her and she will hurt them.. her front claws are out but we still are afraid...any suggestions? I have 2 5 lbers but they are 1 yr old. THey jump up and down from the bed just fine. If you are worried you can get them stairs and teach them how to us them. As for the cat, I don't have any advice sorry. |
I have a bench at the foot of my bed. My 6lb girl could make it up but I'm afraid she'd damage her legs jumping off of it.... |
I dont let our little guy jump up and down ... I am so scared he will hurt himself. I havent weighed him but my guess is around 3pounds at almost 5mos old. |
questions Number one, why do you want them to sleep with you? You won't get a good nights sleep. I use to let my little one sleep with me and little as they are they seem to take up the whole bed. After she passed away we got Belle who weighed 2 pounds. We said no way, too easy to roll on. If they do sleep with you, please do not let them jump down. those little legs are not made for that. At least get a set of steps for them. Walgreens carries them for about $10.00 alot cheaper than a broken leg. |
My girls sleep with me and I have a high bed. One is 3 3/4 lbs the other 2 lbs. I just pushed my bed up against the wall as tight as I could, and I crammed some rolled up blankets into the cracks. They sleep in the corner up beside my pillow, and I have a big poofy pillow below them that I rest my leg on. They are kind of trapped in their little area, and I would know if they ever tried to wander, although they never have! They are quite happy to stay put and settle down for the night. I don't allow my girls to jump up or down off of anything. I found out the hard way, when Missy was just a puppy, how fragile these little ones legs are. She broke her leg from jumping only about 5 inches off of the ground. |

Why not fix a nice warm little bed on the floor beside your bed. If they sleep together, they will keep each other warm and you all will get a better nights sleep. My guy will not sleep on my side of the bed because I am very restless, but he will sleep beside my husband. However, he is 8 pounds and has been jumping on and off things every since he was a baby. He is also a climber. He did this on his own with no encourgement from us. |
Hello:) Mine sleep with us but we waited until they were at least 6 months old before letting them. I worry more about holding "it", more then getting down. If they are old enough to sleep through the night, they will be perfectly happy not leaving your side. Our newest one is 14 weeks old and I put her in bed with us the other morning just for some cuddles before we got up for the day. Bad idea because she had to go---right on my sheets-LOL- Cuddling was worth a load of laundry, with that being said, it will be awhile before she visits us in bed again;) |
All 3 of mine (3.5 lb, 6 lb 6.5 lb) sleep with us and have been since they were 12 weeks old. We do have stairs that they use but have had no problems in the past 2 years. We also have a cat. He did not like them at first but they get along fine now. The cat will either get used to them and start playing (mine does) or he will just stay away from them. |
We have a blanket box next to our bed so the dogs can get up and down easily. |
Our yorkies use stairs for the couch and bed. Many will say their dog jumps on/off the bed with no problems. That may be true and yes many yorkies are capable of jumping on/off furniture but I wouldn't allow it. You're just asking for, if not a broken leg, then years later on probably knee surgery. |

Thanks for the advice...you are right, we haven't decided about the whole bed thing. We know we are going to wait til they are more dependable and then go from there. But we were curious about the jumping. Also for the cat...I know things would probably be fine but we just can't bring ourselves to put them together. Our cat is very "tempermentle" to put it nice and she hangs out strictly in our room or the spare room and mainly under the bed. Supervision under the bed is impossible so we are just scared...and lost at what to do....I am sure in time things will work out. It is good to know though that others have had that problem, now we just got to get over ourselves. We also have an issue with not knowing how "rough" they can get with eachother and seem to seperate them at any little roughness. I wish I knew when to let them "play" and when to stop them. :) I am so worried about these little guys I can not imagine how I am going to be with a child...haha. |
My Callie is 16 pounds and I though sense she was bigger that she would be fine jumping off and on the couch, chairs, and beds but she jumped off the back of the couch to the seat of the couch and injured herself the vet thinks is a soft tissue injury and was limping and in so much pain from hitting her leg wrong on a jump she has made a million times so I would suggest buying stairs and teaching them to use them because if they do hurt them selfs it is horrible to watch them be in pain and then teaching them not to jump off things becomes hard. |
