Yorkie grieving??... Hey everyone, Ever since my dad passed away on Christmas '09 my 2 year old yorkie (who already had separation anxiety issues) has been acting strange. I know she absolutely adored him, and as expected, she's been going all over the house looking for him, staring at the front door, and whining/wimpering a lot. She used to sleep with him on the couch every night, so now I've been bringing her to my bed trying to keep her close. She's also been shaking, mainly at night, since it happened. What else other than giving her extra attention and keeping her as close as possible can I do? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! |
I'm so sorry about your dad, i am sure she is missing him just keep doing what your doing she should be ok |
Hey welcome to YT :) |
I'm so sorry for you and your family's loss. Yes, I find that dogs do get depressed. Wookie got depressed when our other dog was in the hospital for a week. Just give her some time and lots of love. Things will get better. |
oh how sad. im so sorry for your loss. when my papa passed away years ago, his yorkie cuddles could not cope either. i'm not sure what my mema did. i know soon after they had to put her to sleep, she was very old though and it seems like my mema said cuddles gave up after papa died. your yorkie is much younger though. good luck and lots of hugs. |
Yes, they can grieve too. I would just give lots of hugs and extra attention. Time will heal...sorry to hear about your Father :( |
I'm so sorry you lost your Dad. I did some hospital time last year and my family told me that both Cindy and Reesie stared out the window watching the driveway. They would sit there watching for hours. I was gone two weeks and it didn't let up, they were clearly upset over my not being there. When I finally came home the reunion was wild! All you can do is try to take his place in her heart, do the things he would do with her, feeding, games, walks, whatever it takes. Don't give her much time to grieve because that's just what it is. Focus on keeping her mind busy, just like you have to do now. I really believe they react just like we do. |
I am so sorry about the loss of your dad. If you have something of his that you could give her it might comfort her...a shirt that had not yet been laundered? She will adjust in time, but they definitely do grieve. |
I am so sorry for you both, with the loss of dad/grandpa. Appears you have been given good advice - but wanted to express my sympathy while also welcoming you to YT. |
I feel so bad for both of you. Sincere condolences. |
grieving Belle and I send our sympathies to you and your family, we've been there I know it's hard. My Miniature Schnauzer died about a year ago and our lab was there with us so he knew she was gone. They were together all the time and she was the strong one. He grieved alot, he's sit on the couch and stare at the wall or lay on the floor with his head in her little bed. We tried to distract him with attention and walks. He really didn't get better until we got Belle. It took a few days for him to accept her but now they are best friends. 85 pounds and 6 pounds, quite the combo. TJ (lab) still won't play with any of Abby's old toys. He's 12 years old now and I know Abby comes to visit him and he knows they will be together again soon. Hope your little one comes out of it soon. I'll be going through the same thing with Belle when TJ is gone, not looking forward to that. Prayers for all of you. |
I am very sorry for your loss. You've gotten some good advice alreay. Just keep the loving coming and I am sure your little one will come to realize that she is still very much loved. :) Hugs. |
