How do they breed for temperament? We're considering getting Lucky a playmate, either another yorkie, a maltese, a coton de tulear, or a havanese. Anyway, since we got Lucky from a shelter, I really don't know how to evaluate a breeder. My husband and I will start a family over the next few years, so we especially want to make sure that the dog has a good temperament and will tolerate a small child. What questions should I ask a breeder? Plus, how exactly does a breeder breed for temperament? |
I don't know the answer to your question but I wanted to tell you that we have Gracie a yorkie then we got Sammie a maltese. His temprament fits so well with Gracie's She is hyper and a prima donna who gets her feelings hurt and pouts and punishes us when we do wrong... hee hee Sammie is playful, yet calm and not much bothers him. They are best friends. The two breeds are a great fit. |
Thanks for the response Gracie's Mom! I am actually leaning towards a maltese as a companion for Lucky, mainly because I have heard that maltese are supposed to be playful, but a bit calmer and less feisty than yorkies. I thought that they might compliment eachother but it's great to hear it from someone with firsthand experience. :) |

I have two yorkies who are 4 months apart, females. I think the best way to judge temperment is to observe the puppies in their home environment. I even ask if I could take the female I chose outside to see if she would follow me, be playful, etc. This method helped me to pick the personality I was looking for and my girls never changed from that first day. I'm not a breeder but hope this helps. |
AIM socialization is very important in young pups. If they have been around other dogs this will help the transition of coming into a home with dogs. But now you have to keep the one you have socialized as well, This is a two way street for currently owned and potentially owning. My suggestion and what I have done in the past is to let potential new owners to bring their current pet as long as they had proof of vaccinations and they had to understand that their pet was only going to be exposed to the puppy they were looking to purchase. There are tons of puppy temperament tests. You can hire a professional to test a puupy you are interested in to see if is compatible with your family or you can learn to conduct some of the tests yourself which is what I did. Tori, and Cassie are 2 1/2 months apart in age. Tori is hyper and wants to be queen bee, while Cassie is so laid back. I truly love the laid back attitude, although she is active and will get into Tori's face and be vocal when pushed. Wish I could breed for this temeperment each time.
