Topknot causes balding? My Nick has short bangs but I love the look of a topknot so much I have been thinking about trying to grow his hair out. I was in petsmart the other day and saw a yorkie with her hair tied up. When I got up close to pet her I noticed she was going bald! The hair on her head was SO thin - there was barley any there. I didn't mention anything to the owner but I was wondering if having their hair tied up for so long would be the cause of this? Anyone have this problem? |
It could depend on the type of band, how tight it is, how it is taken out, how thick the yorkie's hair is, if the yorkie rubs his/her head or tries to take it out..... Top knots can be very hard on the hair without proper care and could cause it to thin. |
I only use the top knot for special occasions and when we go out if I want a bow in. Other than that I use some snap barettes that I got from Walmart. They are the goody brand and I just put her hair up using one or two. She can get them out, but not as easily as a topknot. If you are worried about losing hair, I'd suggest those for everyday. I put them in when I get home at 3:30 and she will wear them until bedtime. Sometimes I don't use them, though, and her hair just hangs in her eyes all messy.:p |
Missy's hair is tied up 24/7, she really doesn't like it when I let it down. She'll let me scratch her head and brush it out, but then she won't move until her hair is tied back again. There's just so much of it, it's thick and falls right in her eyes and face. So it's annoying to her to wear it down. I do use the the cloth goodie elastics most of the time though, and I tie it quite loose. I think it would be harder on the hair to use rubber bands all the time, but we have no problems with the cloth ones. |
Missy is lucky to have thick hair...My little Apple has thin hair, and the top-knot is doing her no favors...I can't put the rubber band in loose, because Buzz pulls it out and swallows it (I see a rubber band in his poop almost daily )...I can't use the little clips, because that would be dangerous for Buzz to swallow...I think I'm going to have to get her bangs cut, next time she's groomed, as her hair gets thinner and thinner and thinner, as I put it up, daily...Also, Apple is the same way as Missy...She lays very still while I put her hair up, because she doesn't want it in her eyes...I just hate that I'm going to have to cut it, but I am, unless someone else has a better suggestion? |
I have a problem keeping London's hair up so I have her bangs cut. Her sister, especially, hates for London to have something in her hair and ALWAYS takes it out. London really doesn't like me combing her hair, when I do get a clip or band in she rubs her head on the bed or couch and then Rory (her sister) takes it out anyway. So most of the time, London's hair just looks messy unless we go out somewhere. No matter how often I brush her she gets messed up in 5 minutes. When I adopted her she was nearly shaved because of fleas and matting, so I couldn't wait for her hair to grow out. She has a beautiful coat and I love brushing her. Sometimes I can get her to stand still for a few minutes afterward so I can enjoy how pretty she is, but that never lasts long. She is one busy girl! I've seen many a beautiful picture of gorgeous Yorkies on YT sitting so pretty and posing for a pic. Not my girl! She'll stay a a little when I tell her to but not long. I guess I have to work on that. But seeing she lived her first 3 years in a cage and was so amazed when she moved here that she was allowed to run around I just hate trying to slow her down. She does love her freedom! |
When I first got Lupo he had a topknot, and I noticed that he didn't like his head touched, and the skin looked kind of tender :(so i stopped tying it up and after about a week, his head healed and we haven't tried a topknot since. btw he doesnt mind getting his head touched at all now.:) |
