Floor Cleaner I usually use Pine Sol to clean my floors but now that I have Toby I'm wondering if it is safe to use around him. It never bothers Speedy (our shichon) and I try to keep them out of the rooms until the floors are dry. I do know that Speedy loves to roll in whatever I've just finished spraying. If I put on perfume or spray air freshener, she will roll around on the floor where I just sprayed. She's the same way with Carpet Fresh. But she never has rolled around on the floors after I've used Pine Sol. Your suggestions would be appreciated. |
I've been using the steam mop and love it. I like that I know my floors are clean and there are not chemicals everywhere. |
Steam mop? Can you give me more information on it? Who makes it? I like knowing my floors are clean also as we have ceramic tile, laminate, hardwood, carpet, etc. I do have a carpet shampooer for the carpet. |
Steam mops are for mopping your floor with steam, using only water. Not the typical carpet cleaners. They are small & light weight. I believe some have a carpet piece you can attach if wanted. There are several brands on the market, but I've no idea which ones are best. They are supposed to be great at disinfecting floors. Check around, & you will probably find them in the same areas you would find carpet cleaners, vaccuums, etc. |
Thanks! I will look into them but for now I will continue to use my heavily diluted Pine Sol and mop the floors twice! |
this is the one that I have. I got mine from Bed bath and beyond for 99.99 and used a coupon. I saw that Tuesday morning has them for 69.99. |
Found this recipe here Natural House and Home Cleaners , Organic Living and Healthy Lifestyles for cleaning floors * For greasy, no-wax floors: 1 cup vinegar 1/4 cup washing soda 1 tablespoon vegetable oil-based liquid soap 2 gallons hot water Combine all ingredients, stirring well to dissolve the washing soda. Mop as usual. You probably could just sprinkle regular baking soda down for freshen up your carpet. |
My sister for xmas ordered me the oreck steamer so I'm wait for it to arrive. Vacuum Cleaners: Oreck Vacuum Cleaners and Air Purifiers this is the website to the oreck. |

I personally ditched all my household chemicals a few years ago and use various recipes to make green cleaning products. One of my dogs has allergies and I myself was really sensitive and got tired of choking on various fake scents. I also was concerned for the dogs and my parrot with all kinds of stuff in the air and on the floors. I now use Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap (I buy the rose hemp scented one but there are others) and I use that with white distilled vinegar and water. I add essential oils for different purposes. I find that making my own products is more effective at cleaning, and ALOT cheaper. I also use baking soda, but not on my floors because I find it leaves a white film if I dont rinse and rinse and rinse and rinse. By the time I'm done rinsing, I'm exhausted! Alot of people like the steam mop, I had one and got rid of it. It never really got my tile floor as clean as I like it so for me it was not a good option. I am a total convert over to Green Cleaning and my house is cleaner than it ever was! |
I use White vinegar and water on my floors as well as spot clean ups on the carpet. I have all hardwood and laminate throughout and when we had our floors refinished when we moved in, the floor guy said the BEST thing for hardwood is white vineager and water! :D It's also safe. I also do bleach and water about once every two weeks. |
I recently got the Shark Steam mop to clean my floors for that very reason and it works great.... I have never been able to clean my floors this well with a mop. I also hit all the spots where Shayna has pee'd and it sanitizes and deoderizes. I just got the hand held version to clean the rest and love it. No chemicals at all. Oh I tried the Bissell, took it back, way too wet afterwards and not enough pads |
Thanks to all of you for the great tips. Since it's going to be bitter cold in St. Louis the rest of the weekend it looks like I will be mopping floors tomorrow. |

pine sol is pretty toxic I think, I personally would not use it around chester, I would say vinegar and water, I have read that pine sol is not a very good disenfectant at all, maybe cleaner |
After I got my Yorkies, I was concerned about toxins so I bought a Haan Steam Cleaner and I love it. My floors are clean, disinfected (great for my grandkids too) and my babies are safe even with their faces 3-4 inches from the floor. Plus it's fast and easy for me, I used to do floors on my knees now I stand. What's not to like? |
Today I used vinegar and water and really liked the results. Pine-Sol is going down the drain!! Thanks everyone. It's good to hear what others do. |
