New baby girl yorkie Santa delivered a 3-month old yorkie girl and she is a BITER!!!! We understand she may be teething, but can anyone provide tips on how to stop the biting - it actually hurts!! |
use a firm voice and say no...turn away...or walk away. They will get the picture that "mommy and daddy won't play" when they do that behavior. You can use distraction toys too so whenever the pup starts biting say no and give it a toy instead |
Congratulations and I do the same as Yorkiemama1986 said. They do grow out of it. Just have plenty of toys and nylabones for her to chew on. |
Welcome to YT!:) |
Get Bitter Apple from Petsmart or a Pet store and spray what you do not want her to bite or chew on when she is doing it. This includes your ankles and toes. Have a lot of chew toys. We found that purchasing the baby teething rings that have distilled water in them from Walmart and freezing them helped with the teething and the sore gums. They come in packages of 3 in the baby section. It is best to take them away when they start to thaw out or the puppy bites a hole in it. |
All of the above is great advice. One thing I would add when she tries to bite you or your furniture, immediately substitute the 'right' thing for her to chew on. Give her a chew toy or teething toy immediately to satisfy that teething urge. Another deterrent is white vinegar. It works as well as Bitter Apple. |

Somewhere along the line, I was told to "growl" OUT. Practice: sharp, short. If you do it right, it sounds just like the sound Mom would make if she was displeased. When I've done it in the past, things get dropped like a hot potato, especially in pups that have just left "home". Repeated over time, they never forget. If he's biting YOU, he'll stop. He may even stop if he's chewing other "stuff". But always have the substitute ready, too. Enjoy your new baby! |
Welcome to YT! All good advice! I had a problem with biting too and what helped me was I said "OUCH" and then immediately got up and walked away. That seemed to help for some reason... Good luck! :) |
