At what age can I tell what the adult colors of my Yorkie will be? Hello to all, I am new to YorkieTalk. I have been looking all over the internet for the information I needed/wanted about my Yorkies so I am very happy to find a site where I can talk to real people who have Yorkies themselves and I can learn from your experience. I have a 1 year old female named Tiffany and Santa Claus brought me a 12 week old male Yorkie named Romeo. Looking through the internet I have seen some beautiful Yorkies that are very light colored. Instead of the dark steal blue they are a very light steal blue. And instead of the dark tan they almost look blond. I know that is not the perfect AKC standard but I think they are so beautiful. Tiffany at one year has the darker standard colors but her coat on her back seems to be coming in the very light color at the roots. Romeo is already lighter then Tiffany was at 12 weeks and has some very light blue hairs on his head and his tan has blond areas in it. Looking at the puppies on this site I have seen several puppies his age that look just like him. Finally my question is, at what age will I know what their adult colors will be? Also, is their any signs to look for in puppies that give clues to what the adult colors will be? I was reading somewhere that the nutrition the puppy/dog gets determines the color of their coat. If this is true what is the best food to give them? I am currently giving them Science Diet small breed puppy food. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Patricia,Tiffany and Romeo :aimeeyork |
Hi Patricia, Welcome!:):):) As far as the colour changes, I have a three year old and he's still changing!?!? right now he's silver and gold, but he's developed black roots since his neuter a month ago! I think theres a sticky here that has a ton of info on puppy colours and predicting outcomes. There is also a sticky about food grades (A+, B, etc) I dont think science diet is that great. I currently feed my guy Orijen. If you decide to change his food, do it gradually, adding more of the new a little at a time, this will help u avoid tummy upsets. good luck! |
Thank you Thank you very much for the warm welcome and the great information. I keep trying to read all the stickies but I keep getting lost in the pictures. I could just look at these beautiful Yorkies all day. Tiffany's roots are a very light blue. It is time to visit the groomer again and I am trying to decide if I should give her a puppy cut so that I can see that pretty light blue or if I should just get the usual show cut. What are your thoughts? How long does it take for their coat to grow back out? Thank you for your answers. |
Good Morning and welcome to YT!!! I can't advise you on the color issue, but wanted to chat about food some. I don't like Science Diet either. If you read the ingredants you'll see there are too many additives and by-products. I strongly recommend you look at the food sticky in the health / diet section (:rolleyes:think that's were it is). I feed Barley (my 2 yo) Evo and Bijou (6 mth old) Wellness. Hope to see pictures of your babies very soon as they sound wonderful. |
If you are going to be changing out his food, you might want to look at the brands that formulate for "all life stages." That way, you can feed your adult and puppy the same thing. The following are all life stages formulas. (I'm sure this list isn't complete, there are probably more). Before Grain Evo Fromm Honest Kitchen Innova (Small Bites) Sojoss Natures Variety (Instinct, Prairie, and raw) All raw diets |
