My Yorkie killed my Pomchi! Hi all, This is the first time I have used these forums, but when I researched my current problem I did not find much help. I figured by posting it in a forum I could get some insight from others. I have a 7 month old Yorkie, he has been a wonderful dog and gets along great with my 2 year old daughter. He has also been raised around my chihuahua since we bought him at 6 weeks old. However my Husband and I purchased another small puppy (pomchi) to be exact. The yorkie didnt show any signs of aggression and even played with the new puppy and snuggled it at night. One night we went to a movie and left the dogs together, upon returning home we found our newly purchased pomchi dead.:( Now I have always owned little dogs, never a yorkie though, but I would have never guessed a yorkie capable of killing another animal!! Well my Husband bought me another pomchi and thinking it would be ok to incorporate her into the house we tried. The yorkie has a whole new attitude, he is growling at my daughter and the other dogs. He is nipping at anything that comes near him except my Husband and I. I dont know what to do though, I love the little guy but is my daughters and my other dogs safety worth keeping him? I just dont know if I should try and sell him to someone who doesnt have small children or small pets and it would make a better home. Please if anyone can help I am all ears! |
I'm sorry to hear this. I don't have any insight for you but I hope that you can figure this out. |
hi so sorry to hear that, when i brought my sonny home my older one bailie hated him, constant growling and showing teeth, i cud not ever have left them all together, but as time went on and bailie softened towards him , now sonny is 1yrs and they all like brothers and sisters,i never made them be friends, and try to put them together, he come round on his own, when he was ready. i wish u all the best what ever ur decission.:animal-pa |
I'm sorry you're in this tough situation. The first thing I would reccomend doing is bringing in a professional dog trainer. They can help you establish the role of alpha in your house, as my first thinking is that this is a dominince issue. Your yorkie might feel threatened by the new dog. Has your yorkie showed signs of agression towards other small animals? You probably know that yorkies were originally bred to hunt and kill rodents and the like, so if your puppy that passed was significantly smaller that could have something to do with it. But anyway, in short, I definitely think the best choice you could make right now is to seperate the dogs when you don't have complete supervision over them (put one in a seperate room, put them in crates/x-pens, etc), and bring in a trainer. If the trainer feels that the attitude can't be changed, I would suggest a yorkie rescue, as they are very particular about making sure that your dog will go to the home that is *perfect* for him. Best of luck to you! I so hope this works out so you can keep your little guy! I'm sure he's a very sweet dog otherwise. |
