What games do you play with your furbutts? Missy ALWAYS wants to play and I would love to get some ideas for games and know what you and your furbabies like to do!! Also, I read that it's bad to play tug of war games with terriers. Is it true?? |
Ohh Peanuts fav subject is GAMES LoL Peanut loves tug of war! He has a fav bone, and I will put it in one my hands and make him pick which one it is in, by sniffing.. He loves that game! He loves to play fetch with anything! Umm he loves to dig on my pillow or in his bed and I can get him started by digging on my pillow and he will go crazy!! umm those are his top 2. :D |
Our friend also told us not to tug of war with terriers b/c it will make them aggressive. but I disagree. Your dog knows when it's play growling (ears up, no teeth showing, tail wagging) and unhappy growling (the opposite). Uni loves to tug, she will tug tug tug and if you let go, she's like WTF! you let go! She loves to fetch. She loves to have me watch her chew on something. If I leave she will come over and bark at me. So I ask her, what does she want and I follow her. She'll go back to her chew and start on it again. I leave, and same thing. So I've come to suspect she likes to me just look at her. |
Zoey's favorite game by far is 'find the bone'. This began with the hide-a-squirrel toy and has evolved to us hiding just about any of her toys including her current favorite mouse (stolen from Sasha the cat). She is a terrier thru and thru and LOVES to have her nose exercised. The only challenge is getting her to close her eyes so she does not see where it is hidden. Usually this is accomplished by distraction and we continuously hide her toy/bone and then praise her highly when she finds it. This is one of her favorites that does NOT involve treats. The other favorite activity of Zoey's is practicing her tricks. She loves this so much and I am convinced it is more than just for treats. She really loves it and if I stop too soon, she is noticably disappointed. She also likes to play fetch and this is something we have engaged with her since we first brought her home. Her favorite toy to fetch is a soccer ball that squeeks. This too is a game that involves treats and/or praise. Hope that helps! Most of all - have fun!! |

Smokey's favorite game is chase. He'll bark at me with his little butt in the air and I know that means he wants to play chase - me the chaser and him the chasee. Chip's favorite game is tug of war. He's so funny because he'll have his toy right in front of you and just be growling and going all nuts and if you put your hand a few inches away from his face, he'll run full force into your hand, still growling, with the toy sticking out of his mouth. I have no idea why he does this because as soon as you go to grab the toy, he runs away with it. |

Throw the toy just far enough where you can grab it or point to it.. Then as soon as they go to get it tell them to bring it.. once they do treat them and tell them good boy/girl Thats how I taught Peanut. Or if that doesnt work when he does bring the toy to you tell them good boy and give them a treat. |
My furkids very favorite is hide and seek. Hubby keeps them in one room with him while I go hide, then I call them and see who can find me first. They get so excited to go find mommy! Theyre too funny! |
Alfie loves to play fetch with his fav' teddy, then he and Rosie join together to play tug-of-war with me. Rosie loves to play with her little ball, she flips it around with her paws or head and chases it. She's started to get the idea of fetch by watching Alfie and will wait for me to roll it across the floor then run and get it. She also likes to pick things up and get Alfie to chase her for it. And sometimes they just go mad chasing each other around. |
I know this one! Maddie's favorite game is -Wait until mommy sits down and decide I need something.:D When we're not playing that one, she LOVES fetch and keep away. |
These are some great ideas. I'm stuck at home with a really bad cold and I don't want Missy to get bored. :( I can't take her for a walk. Boyfriend takes her for one before work but she usually needs at least 2 walks. I was thinking if getting her a hide-a-squirrel. :) I'm going to try hide and seek with her and also hide her toys and see if she can find them. capt_noonie, I agree with you! Missy only growls and tugs when we are playing tug of war. It's her favorite game and she isn't aggressive at all. Still scared of other furbabies though. :( |

That is my whole group. Well, except Gracie. They love for me to hide and then jump out at them. Adie is the fetch queen and Skeeter loves to tug-a-war. I think it is ok to play that with any dog that knows the command "drop it" or "leave it." |
