Puppy's Ears At what piont does a Yorkies ears begin to stand, I have a 8wk old puppy and his ears fold over. Is that a genetic trait or is it something they grow into. |
You can tape the ears up to help "train" them to stand up. It also helps to keep the hair on the top 1/3 of the ear cut down real short. It takes a little while before they will stand on their own. |
I never did anything to Zekie's ears, and they eventually stood up by themselves. He still has all his original hair on his ears and that is the way I like him. |
Sometimes they come up on their own and sometimes they won't. If they are not up by 8 weeks, I tape them. You could try shaving first, and if that does not help, then tape them. |
Jackson's didn't stand up until he got groomed at 4 1/2 months old and they tipped his ears. |
Our baby boy Ares had me so scared his ears wouldn't stand up on his own. When we first brought him home they were up and perky, then one day later one was folded over... next week the other would fold over... then both up again! lol I was so worried! I had him groomed, and they just took off a little hair on his ears but they didn't need to be taped. Don't worry about it, you can train the ears by taping and/or tippping. Give the pup sometime! Congrats on your new furbaby! |
I wouldn;t worry too much about them yet. 8 weeks is still young. One of my pups had floppy ears at 8 weeks and now at 19/20 weeks they are perfectly straight all the time and they've been that way for a few weeks now. |
my baby's ears axel is now 14 weeks and his ears are perky up...but they were one folded over at 8 weeks and then two over then perky by 10 weeks so i think they probably do it on there own...he is now a show dog and i really liked the folded over look so...but don't matter we just having fun no matter which way they flop. |
my experience I have a 1.5 year old male Yorkie. His ears were fine and then suddenly 2 months ago, he had a droopy ear. I was pretty worried. Then I posted my concerns here and the advice was to have his ears tipped. I had not done that yet because I didn't realize how much better he would look. I called my groomer and talked to her about it. She said she had noticed the ear, but didn't think tipping the ears would matter much. I had her do it anyway. When I walked into her shop and saw my little boy, I was amazed. Both ears standing up beautifully. My groomer was just as surprised and excited as I was. We don't know if the ear was actually droopy or iff all that hair just made it look that way. Anyway, I am pretty happy and grateful for the wonderful information I got from some kind people here. My dog even acts happier and now. He finally looks like the Yorkies in the magazines. I didn't know the tipping would make so much difference. |
Alfie is coming up to 15 weeks and his ears aren't up. If they go up they go up, if they don't then they don't. He's a pet not a show dog so I'm not worried. I think he looks cute though with floppy ears. |
