Second Yorkie and first not liking her I wanted to get some suggestions on how to help my almost 5 year old male like our new little 12 week old female Yorkie? It's only day three but he is still growling at her when she comes around me or when she wants to play with him.:animal-pa He thinks I am his Mommy and is very protective of me and jealous...what should I do? |
Generally a 5 yr old does not like a new puppy due to the pup being very active and wanting to play. Also, he has been an only child for 5 years too and in turn does not understand why this dog is there taking his loving from his mommy. You have to be prepared to put a LOT of effort into helping your boy accept the new pup. This can take months. Be careful and not let him hurt her. I had this issue too when my oldest was 2 years old when I brought in a new pup. I swear I think my girl thought she was human and did not understand why we bought a pet. Good luck :) |
It took months for our 2 1/2 year old male to accept a new female pup. Just a lot of patience. Be sure to give them equal attention and that each has their own crate, toys, bowls.... I found that Finnigan would get upset when I was doing something with Gwenndilyn and not him. It just takes a little time. They'll be playing together in no time. |
I just wonder how long it will take him...I am giving him a ton of special attention so he knows she isn't taking his place and feeding him first and giving him treats first...and she adores him and barks at him b/c he wont play with her :animal-pa |

Thank you for the guidance I hope your right , I look forward to them being friends. |
It took Kayti at least 6 or 7 months to act like she kinda liked her little sister.Luckly little sister didn't seem to notice too much.lol |
Well she isn't going anywhere so time hopefully will be on her side |
We have had Maggie for a year and Buster has some what accepted her but now she is the one growling at him. Buster just turned two, Maggie was one in September. They really don't get along at all. They have separate food bowls, separate crates, I buy two of each toy, etc. I don't know when, if ever, they will start to get along. I try to spend time with each one, but if I take one for a walk, the other will sit at the door and cry. But neither of them are going anywhere so I wish they would change their 'tude. |
I have a 11 month old female (alpha dog) and a 9 month old male. Tessie didn't like him at first but after about a month she started changing her mind. She still controls him even though he is bigger. I got a 10 week old male puppy 3 weeks ago and Tessie was very upset so we didn't leave them without supervision. Now she just loves to aggravate him and push him around but will not hurt him. All 3 play with the same toys and walk outside together and eat together. I have been very blessed that they love each other. Tessie still rules the boys and proves that she is the Queen of the house. Hang in there it should get better. |
Interesting thread! Good luck with your pups!:thumbup: |
I had some jealousy issue's initially when i first brought home one of the puppies with my almost 2 year old Yorkie. She would growl at little Cinnamon and constantly push over as if to show her SHE was the alpha dog. I tried to spend extra time using distraction with them and she seems to be past it now. Anytime I would bring Cinnamon out, I would immediately get a couple toys to start distracting both of them by teasing them to play with the toys. they would ultimately end up playing tug awar with each other. Your 5 year old yorkie is just worried that he might lose you since he has had all of your attention for so long. Eventually he will probably come to terms and enjoy the new addition once he realizes he can still be the (YOUR) alpha dog :) |
We just went through the same thing with a jealous 3 year old Westie and a new female yorkie puppy. Lucy has been here for now . .3 months . . and things are much better than at the beginning. One thing to remember is that your five year old is not in constant 'play mode' as your puppy is. Give her a private space where she can get away from the puppy's antics if necessary. Lucy drives my Westie crazy by constantly crawling all over his head; all over his body . . anything to get his attention and to play. Sometimes he does; sometimes he doesn't. When he doesn't - he can climb up on his high stool or couch where she can't get to him. We had out and out fights . . so if you are not having that .. then I think you have a good chance of blending into a harmonious family. You are doing the right thing by doing EVERYTHING FIRST for your older dog. Lavish attention on your oldest and that will lessen the jealousy. It's hard because puppies are so needy . . but it can be done. Sounds like you are on the right track! Have patience and let us know how things progress. |
Thank you everyone for the suggestions , Dallas has started already to tolerate little Philly more and more, the hardest time is play time...he wants to play but he has lost some teeth and cant hold the toy during tug of war like little Philly can ,sometimes I help him and Philly will paw at him or snap at him...at times she chases and barks at him and he gets mad and will snap at her , this has happened several times but Dallas has never bit her ...just shows his teeth..most of the time he just runs from her....and that concerns me b/c she will become the Alpha more Dominant dog and from what I read he should remain the Alpha...is this true and has anyone added a new addition and found they became the alpha dog? |
Yep. Just because Dallas was the first does not necessarily mean he will remain the alpha dog. The dogs have to work it out and sometimes the new comer ends being the alpha dog. That happened to a freind of mine and oddly enough her older one was a male and new comer was a female. I don;t know if this is true or not but I've heard that female's can actually be more dominating then the males. Who knows. It probably just depends on the dog not it s*x :) My Belle would bark, growl and snap at Cinnamon a lot in the beginning but she never actually bit her or anything. At times they end up going at it and Belle's growls so load i swear she will hurt Cinnamon but I've put my hand into the mix of the wrestling match and I've found that they play nibble with each other just like they do with me. Oh my gosh. Its so fun to watch them play now. They have a blast and its like a tornado coming through at times, especially when all 3 are in the mix. :) You probably just need to give it time. I was a little nervous with how things would work out at first too. You just want to make sure that you never allow them to actually hurt one another. They will need supervised time together for a long time. |
Good to know I am not the only one going through this. Okay so now I have another worry, lets see if I can pick your brain on this one. Philly made a stink stink on the floor yesterday and it had a long white worm ..looked online and they said it's probably hook rooms and most puppies have them , so made her a Vet appt. for day after tomorrow my concern is though can my kids get it by her licking them? Any thoughts? Also do you know how to post the little postcards people send ? Or the Avatars? |
Like other said it takes a little time and each one is different. I was lucky all mine got along right away, but I just fostered a pom puppy and she was high energy and my Roxie, the newest of mine, did not like her at first and would go after her. By the 3rd week she was taking her toys to the puppy wanting to play and letting the puppy snuggle up with her. Just as they were getting along so great, the puppy found her forever home. |

Did you try calling your vet just to see if you can bring them a stool sample right away? You might be able to find out tonight or tomorrow morning and get treatment for the puppy sooner. |
thats a great idea, I will call the vet tomorrow and ask about just bringing in the sample...Glad were friends :) My kids are 16 and 14 so they know to be careful not to let her lick them ....but ya just never know. Jana:animal-pa |
Update on my dogs getting along. Dallas is coming around slowly but surely. He and Little Philly will play tug of war , and they run around together outside , I have even had both of them take a nap w/ me today on the couch and Dallas came up to her while she was sleeping and licked her and smelled her. YAAAAA! Maybe a couple more weeks and we will all be one big happy Yorkie family! Thanks all again for your support!Super happy I found you.:animal36 |
Yep just takes time. I'm sitting at the computer right now with two on my lap. My older one Belle and one of my pups Bailey. About a 1/2 hour ago it was Belle and Cinnamon (the one Belle didn;'t like as much in the beginning :) I try to type and pet each of them at the same time. This cuddle at the computer thing seems to have helped them too. Its so cute to have them sleeping curled up together on my lap. I think I need a bigger lap. hahaha NOT....gotta keep on that New Years diet. :) |
My Gracie is 9 months old and has definitely ruled the roost. We brought little sis home almost 3 weeks ago. At first Gracie growled and wouldn't share her food, her toys, or her bed but I am pleased to say she is coming around nicely. They play and share toys and can BOTH sit on my lap at the same time now without Gracie growling. Little sis didn't notice how rude Gracie was being but Mom sure did. I just made sure to give Gracie plenty of one on one time and praise. I did scold her when she was naughty with the baby. So happy that the transition has been so quick. We were hopeful since Gracie is only 9 months that they would be buds. Someone told me if they were several years apart the older would act like a mom rather than if they were close in age they would be like friends. That was part of our decision to add a second at this time. Yippee!! |
It takes a while for some dogs, especially if they've been the only dog in the house for a long time. For me..like I remember when i first got Sophie..Teddy and London were like around a yr old. They actually liked her right away and wanted to play. Sophie was like 6 mos old. London took to her right away. But now I have little Olivia who just wants to play and London just looks at her like back up girl lol London is very playful but she doesnt want to play with olivia just yet. I think it will take some time. Meanwhile all Teddy wants to do is smell her lol. After they adjust and realize they are all here to stay they will get more comfy with each other |
