Tell me what you think As some of you all know I have been thinking of breeding and researching for about 8 months now and have really been searching high and low for wonderful breeders to purchase my babies from.I want to raise my breeding pair from puppies.I want us to be bonded and I want my parents to feel comfortable and safe with me. I have talked to many many breeders and I have found that alot of them take the puppies to the vet for shots and check-ups and some say they give there own vaccinations. As for myself I would want a puppy from someone who has physically taken the baby to the vet to be seen and given shots than from someone who has given there own what do you think? Do they not purchase the vaccinations from a co-op or internet. I just feel better knowing my baby was given its vaccinations from a licensed vet. I do ask how the babies have received their vaccinations and some seem to get offended. Who you? I still have not decided if I will breed or not some days I think I could but I really think in the end I would just have a house full of yorkies I just love mine so so much I would have to keep all my grandbabies lol.Merry Christmas to all and May all your dreams come true in "2010":animal36 |
Well, personally I think it would be ok to have the breeder give the vaccinations but I would still want them to have been examined by a vet before they came to me. There are some benefits to a breeder giving their own vaccinations that have nothing to do with money. The vets office is just about the best place for new puppies to pick up seriously and deadly diseases so I really understand why some prefer to do it themselves. If you are looking for breeding stock, you might want to wait until they are older. That's the only way to know you are getting dogs that meet the standard. Good luck with your search and take your time! |
I give them the shots myself. It's less stress for all of us! However, they are always Vet checked, which includes stool samples and an exam. |
Thank you for your reply I so understand the office visit for the babies could be dangerous. So where do you buy your vaccinations from? Also at what age do you take your babies to the vet? |

is one place. The only vaccination that must be administered by a vet is the rabies vaccine. Vaccines are packed in ice and sent overnight delivery.....as they would to a vet. Most reputable breeders will take a collective stool sample to the vet for parasite testing...... When to take a pup to the vet for a complete check up is souly dependent on the breeder and the situation. I've taken mine in at a week of age, after hours when no other dogs are on prem, only because their mom took ill and the pups were being hand reared....... However, I don't take them in for a complete check up and testing until they are just about ready to go to their forever homes,...... Of course if there is a situation that arises that warrents vet check up sooner....then off they go. Remember most reputable breeders work closely with their vet and have learned a lot from the vet.......and would do nothing to jeapordize the health of a puppy. |
I have always taken mine in for all their shots. This way he can examine my babies each time and let me know. He is checking heart, eyes, knees, bites, etc... I do wait in my car until they can take us right in to a room and I always bring a pee pad to keep them away from the contact of the table. I just prefer mine to go in each time and see the vet. I figure better for him to know how they act when healthy and to check anything that I may miss. So far so good. None of my pups have caught anything and this is in 25 years. Also I prefer killed vaccinces - knowing from when I was a vet tech. I know now there are some you cannot get killed, like Parvo vaccine which is included in the booster with the others. So your shots now contain live and killed virus. |
If you do order your shots via mail, be sure they are nice and cold, especially in the summer. If not - they need to be thrown out. |

When I was a vet tech we order ours through Fort Dodge. My vet taught me well about precautions with vaccines. I guess this is why I would rather be safe than sorry and go in to the vets. Hmmm.... I even know how to give shots and I still go in for my vet to give the shots to my pups. When I worked as a vet tech I gave shots, changed bandages, took out stitches, counted white bood cells, developed x-rays, helped in surgery, ran the oxygen, and well... you name it I did most of work needed... including reception work and kennel work: bathed cats and dogs, yep - all of it! Here I am in my 20s with my first yorkie (on the left) and a patient/friend yorkie on the right (wolly coated). This was a loooong time ago. Ahhh... to be young again! |
