Got a new Yorkie and have a couple questions. First of all this little guy is great! I got my wife a little 4 year old Yorkie for Christmas. Needless to say, she is already silly about him. lol Now, I have a couple questions about his breath and fur around his face. His breath is pretty bad. We bought some stuff you put in his water that is supposed to help his breath, but as of yet, it has not helped. Also, the fur around his face is pretty stinky. Is there anyway to keep that clean enough to keep it from smelling? Thank you |
His breath smells because he is teething. You could brush his teeth and that may help a bit but it will get better after hes done teething. I just use baby wipes on the face |
I think the OP says the dog is 4 years old (not 4 months), so should be done teething a long time ago. But I agree, chachi - I use baby wipes (unscented) for face, etc. |
Have you discussed it with your Vet? He probably has some sort of tooth problem. Perhaps one of his baby teeth didn't fall out as it should have, or he has tartar and periodontal disease and needs his teeth cleaned. |
Thanks for the replies. I have yet to take him to the vet. My sister sold him to me a couple days ago. I will try the baby wipes for his face. From what I am gathering, stinky faces for Yorkies is common. Is this correct? I think it's because he licks his face and his hair gets wet when he drinks. |
Like others have suggested he may need his teeth cleaned. Sophie Kate's face gets really dirty also, I use baby wipes on her it helps a lot. |
Oh I thought you said 4 months. In that case he probably has a decayed tooth and thats calling the smell. A vet needs to look at his teeth |
I would also suggest checking with the vet for any issues with his teeth. I have 5 yorkies and I don't notice any of them having stinky faces. Congratulations, though, on your new yorkie! They are the best:D |
Welcome to YT !! You are gonna love it here :) |
Welcome to YT & Congratulations on your new little guy. We rescued our first yorkie when she was 4 years old and her breath was bad because of tooth decay. The vet pulled a number of teeth and then she went on a softer diet. No more bad breath after that and she lived to be 16! I wash our Sophie's little face with warm water and a baby washcloth. It works great and costs less:D |
Congrats on the new baby! Stinky face could actually be coming FROM the mouth and maybe just not noticing. But it should clear up once you wash the face if that is not the case of it coming from the mouth. I bathe mine once a week with a tearless DOG shampoo so that I can wash the face when I bathe her whole body. It helps a lot to be able to do that, and can use the wipes or a warm wash cloth in the meantime. Saliva, water, and food gunk can build up on their 'beards' and it can tend to smell if not washed often enough. So make sure you wash that little face as often as you feel necessary to make it not smelly. As far as teeth everyone is right you need to get them checked with a vet, it's best to do that and get it over with so you know the condition of your dogs teeth. But also I would start introducing to brush its teeth. Either with a finger brush you can get from a pet store, or some people use gauze wrapped around their finger. Just get any kinda dog toothpaste from the pet store you think you'd wanna use. If it isn't used to this or if it's mouth is sensitive it will probably fight you but don't give up. Try to do a couple teeth every couple of hours until you get the mouth done. If it takes a couple days to finish it then that's OK. At least you are getting the dog used to you messing around in its mouth and the teeth are getting clean, no matter how long it takes. |
