Dog flu? There was a brief story on my local news last night about a dog flu that is killing alot of animals. Anyone else hear of this? |
I went to their website and there was the story. www.wjbf.com |
I read about that a few days ago....started on a greyhound track. It mimicks kennel cough symptoms at first, then they become very ill. I'm wondering, though, if dogs in kennels, or around lots of other dogs alot are more at risk. My dogs take a walk everyday, see other dogs occasionally, but inside the rest of the time. Hopefully they are at lower risk. You have to keep your logical sense about you and try not to worry unless it becomes a bigger problem nationwide-then I have no problem quarantining my dogs! |
Yes , it was on our news over the weekend. Then on Monday, my Boyfriends Cocker had the RUNS for 2 days... it was the first thing I thought of,,but she's ok now. |
The news is exagerating this...the fatality rate for this disease is something like pnemonia in humans. It can kill the verry old and the verry young, sometimes. I believe the rate I read was 4%. |
Sending hugs to all furbabies who catch it! (((((((FURBABIES))))))) |
It's hit up north in my area among others. Look on the home page of YT. Fasteddie posted an article about it... One of the symptoms is a persistent cough. Don't know that I've ever heard a dog cough before... |
Copper started coughing this week and I took him to the vet. They are treating him for Kennel Cough again. He had it a few weeks ago and it cleared up...Vet said his lungs are clear and no fever. He said that he hasn't had any cases of the flu yet, but that he wanted to treat Copper with antiobiotics and not take any chances of it developing any secondary infections. Now I am worried about this little guy. I read several articles when I got home, and it doesn't seem to be as bad as they make it out to be. Hope my little guy just has kennel cough and that nothing else develops. Let me know if you see any other articles that might be of interest in this dog flu stuff. |
I heard some news stories this week -- and the Vet they were talking to said that it is like Kennel Cough, and they were treating them with the same medications. They just said, be smart and not to take your dogs around a bunch of other dogs. If they started having any symptoms within 1 or 2 weeks, take them to the vet. I heard it was 5-percent. I think the media is exaggerating a bit -- so if your dog seems sick, just take him in for treatment. |

Ann, dont worry to much as your vet sounds very knowledgeable and is taking all the right measures in keeping your baby safe. I am not by any means tell you to take your guard down totally, Just that it sounds like your vet is doing everything right.... from what I have read about this flu... |
