My yorkie is scratching and biting her feet please help. I have a 2 year old yorkie. She scratches all the time and gnaws at her feet. Her tummy is very very sensitive and the vet put her on I/D but, she doesn't want to eat it anymore so I switched her to boiled rice and boiled chicken and twice a day I give her alittle yogurt for her tummy. I thought maybe she was allergic to the food but, after switching her she's still scratching. Could it be the rice? I've read that Apple Cider Vinegar helps. Can anyone tell him if it's true? If so, how do I use it? Thank you and hope to hear from you all soon!!!! Anne |
I would call the vet. It could be that she is still reacting to the food. It might take a while to get it out of her system. |
It's more likely the chicken if it's a food issue. My oldest is allergic to chicken and he gnaws at his feet constantly if he eats it. Also, the diet of boiled chicken and rice isn't enough nutrients for your baby. If you're going to feed a homecooked diet you really need to look into supplements to add to the food. |
Thank you for your quick replies. Her I/D food was turkey and rice.So I am not sure she's allergic to the chicken. She's only been on it for about 3 weeks. I do give her vitamin supplements.She seems happier eating the homecooked. Now if only she'd stop scratching. |

I don't think that's the case because she would scratch just as bad with the turkey. In other words, she scratched with the turkey I/D and she scratches with the chicken. Unless she's allergic to protein. |

Since I brought her home at 8 weeks she was on Pro Plan (because that's what the breeder had her on), she did very well on it until she turned about 1 1/2, then, she developled bloody diarhhea with mucous on and off. The vet would put her on flagyl for a few days, she would go back to normal and then a month or two later she would get it again. Her tummy is so sensitive that Frontline would affect her and so would her shots. The vet would also put her on I/D while she was sick and then, she would go back to Pro Plan until, one day the vet told me to keep her on I/D only. I did but, she would still get sick on and off and, then all of a sudden about 3 weeks ago she refused to eat it at all. That's when I started boiling chicken and rice. She loves it. Keep in mind she has always scratched with Pro Plan, I/D and with the chicken now. I feel horrible for her. She's the sweetest smartest baby I have ever had. I need to post some pics of her. I really think it could be the chicken, if her itching is food related. Have you had allergy testing done to see if she has environmental allergies? The itching may not be food related at all. I would normally suggest switching to a food that doesn't contain chicken for a few months and see how she does. But, with her stomach issues I wouldn't want you to feed her something that aggravates that. There are some members on here who are extremely knowlegeable about foods - I hope one of them will see this and be able to help. Good luck!! |
i would sit down with your vet and go threw the time line again i know she was thear but sometimes it helps to hear it again then if the vet dose not do something or you do not like what the vet dose ask for a consult with another vet |
anne, is it possible the problem might be due to salted roads or path ways at your location ,i had the same event with my sally, as you will gather winter ice brings the spread of salt , after walks we dip her paws in a cup of warm water and dry them off, this is just a shot in the dark, my kind regards--tony and sally age 10yrs--reading uk. |
Thanks Tony and Sally. We live in Florida, however, there may be something she is allergic to in her path. I will keep that in mind. She's crate trained, even though, she has her bed, and many times she on my bed, but, I was wondering if maybe it's what I clean her crate with. i don't know what to do anymore. |

Have you changed shampoo/conditioners lately? Could that be the problem? Also be sure you are giving a thorough rinse after. The ACV would definitely be worth trying. It's good for a lot of things. |
