wanted to know if anyone knows anything about yorkies with rough/coarse coats My Yorkie, Dover, is a 8 month old male. His coat is extremely rough and nowhere close to that "typical" yorkie feel. My groomer says she has one yorkie that is like this and that it will probably stay like this. The hair on his face is slightly less coarse, as is the hair on his legs and chest, but his body is really coarse. i will post pictures later, as i am a new member to YorkieTalk. I would just like to hear your stories. |
I wanted to welcome you to YT. Sorry I can't help you with your question but you came to the right place. I have learned a great deal from being here from a short time. |
The show standard for a Yorkie coat is long and silky, but Yorkies are born with many different types of coats, some of which are not "to the standard". My Yorkies all have fairly good coats, but one has a cottony coat which is prone to tangling if not kept fairly short. My sister's Yorkie has the Yorkie standard coat and is easier to keep tangle-free, however, he is too large for the Yorkie show standard. But they are to pet standard which is healthy and loveable. |
some people think he doesn't look like a yorkie, but he sure is one, i know the breeder, poor guy gets made fun of! but i love him to pieces regardless if he has a "ugly" coat |

I am new here too...... So I have actually been meaning to post this same question. But it sounds like our babies have the same coat...... her face is a little bit longer and softer, but her back is short and coarse. My other yorkie, Hendrix, is very very thick and soft and sometimes he gets curly.... his hair is like slik, though. They are complete opposites. |

the only pics i have on my computer are of from ages ago when he was 3 months old or i would post some |
Welcome to YorkieTalk:wavey: I'm sure your little guy will have all the love for you all yorkies possess. The type of coat has no bearing what so ever on a yorkies' attributes if you aren't going to the show ring. It make no difference in regard to who Dover is and makes him no less of a true yorkie :aimeeyork. Looking forward to seeing Dover's photos:). |
I just wanted to welcome you to YT! I'm sure your little furbutt is precious!! :) |
You might want to try Yorkie Splash shampoo & Yorkie Shine conditioner. Sophie has a soft coat anyway but these products make her coat even more amazingly soft and smooth. You can google it if your interested or PM me;) |
2 Attachment(s) My yorkie has a similar coat... Its called cottony, I actually love her coat she looks more like a dust mop at times. Her face and legs are actually quite soft and very fluffy, so I give her this hair cut and keep the hair long on her face and tail and a little fluff ball of a tail.. I love it :D Attachment 302311 Attachment 302310 |

jeanm1963-that baby is precious and I love that cut!!! The one in my avatar has that rough coat. Her face, breast, and tummy hair is all very soft and super super silky, but her back is coarse (there are some pictures in my album that shows her coat a little better). It never grows much more than about 2.5 or 3 inches long. Her poor hair breaks off all over the place too. On a positive side it never matts and I never have to have her groomed. I keep her on high quality dog food with salmon for her coat/skin and she always has a very shiny coat, so I assume it is as healthy as I can make it be. After a bath, I rub a tiny bit of Cowboy Magic leave in conditioner which makes it super soft and extra shiny. |
I like the wooly/cottony coats too. My Yorkie pup is 5.5 months now and may be going in that direction. Either way I am going to be keeping him in a puppy cut, we are just not a very formal family, our Yorkies are going to be coming camping with us, etc. Anyway...they are all just so cute and special. |
