Growling at My Husband. . . Need Advice From My YT Comrades Our 13 month old Yorkie just recently started growling at my husband if he approaches me when the furbaby is on my lap or sleeping near me. She NEVER has done this before. It is the ONLY time she growls at him. It's almost as if she is guarding me or not wanting to share me at that time. It stops as soon as he picks her up. But she does it in an aggressive way. He has never even raised his voice in the house, startled her or anything. We are concerned as it is just occurring with him. It started out of the blue. How do we stop the behavior? We are trying this . . . when he approaches and she growls, I say "NO" in a firm voice and put her on the ground and ignore her for 3-5 minutes. Just got the idea today and have only done it twice. Is this a good option or are their better ways to handle it? |
That sounds like a great start. I'd keep doing that for awhile. Maybe that will end it. Next I think I'd have him approach w/treats & offer them before the growling starts, and only then. If he growls, no treats & on the floor again. Maybe dh could be the one to feed him for awhile, & also some extra play time. Hopefully he'll get over this stage before he develops into a worse bad habit. Good luck! |
Growling... Hello!:) We (my mother and I) have raised these little terrors all my life... over 35yrs and all I can tell you is that you probaly won't get this behavior to stop. I have seen them have the strangest little habits. I have a one about the same age as yours and he is terrified of my husband. Have no idea why; we have all kinds of animals and they all love my husband. Possum (my yorkie) loves him in the morning when he first wakes up but as soon as he puts his boots on... that's it. :D Possum will pee himself if my husband moves too fast. Its a little comical. But Possum loves our son, who is my husband made over. Possum is fine with my son's boots. Your baby is just being a yorkie. As long as she isn't biting I would just ignore it. Good Luck! |
We went thru that with Keegan for a little while. He slept with us but when he started that...at night, into his crate he went, for a week. It made him know that HE was not the king of my world. |
