Yorkie/Silky confusion cleared up 1 Attachment(s) There has been so much confusion on people wondering if their yorkie is really a silky because they do look so similiar.I was presented with my new rescue a yorkie/silky mix who looks so much like a full silky thought id take his pic next to my yorkie girl who is a similiar color hopefully you can see the difference side by side of the head difference. silky on the right yorkie on the left. |

1 Attachment(s) I've been told by sooo many people in public that "he's definitely a Silky!" It kind of irritates me because most people have NO idea, they think just because he's larger, he's automatically not a Yorkie. I, personally, could care less if he's a Silky OR a Yorkie. I tend to think he's mixed... Silky/Yorkie. I've seen a few "Silkshire Terriers" from (ugh) pet stores and he looks just like them. I've heard a lot of times people will use a Silky for a mama since their bigger and a Yorkie for the dad since their smaller. I see traits of both breeds in him. |
I'm so glad I found this thread. I'm new to Yorkies (Sparticus is my first) and people have asked me if he's a Silky. He is registered as a Yorkie, but he does have some of the traits of a silky. He's 7 months old and almost 7 lbs. He has a bit longer nose and big ears. He's truely adorable!!! From what I have researched, Silkies were used in the formation of the Yorkie breed so it just makes since that they would look very similar. |
Actually it's the other way around. Silkies came from a cross of Yorkies and Australian terriers. Don't know why I know that. I guess it's all that time spent watching dog shows. I can't really tell the difference since they look so much alike -- same general shape and coloring. No one has ever mistaken my Willie for anything other than a Yorkie but often I've been asked if Archie is a Silkie. Not only are they both registered Yorkies but also twins - litter mates. I guess it's because Archie looks bigger. |

Yorkie verses Silky I had a male and female Silky and I bred them a couple of times. They say the difference is size. Yorkies are suppose to be 5 to 7 lbs., and Silky's are suppose to be 8 to 10 lbs. but that does not hold true in many cases some Yorkies are over and some Silkys are over that true weight.It's just like humans,you can't tell size they will grow up to be. |

1 Attachment(s) To me the biggest difference I think is the skull head and forehead. My big yorkie that looks like a silky has a more flat forehead and my little yorkie has the more round forehead. Silky have the more flat forehead and yorkies are suppose to have the more rounded look. I have a not so good picture but at least you se my example. My bigger yorkie has flat forehead while my little yorkie has the rounder forehead. My bigger yorkie looks so much like a silky. He is also longer body. Any way, My 2 cents on the matter.;) |
Ella has traits of a yorkie and a silky. Ella's mom was a yorkie and her dad a silky. I always thought it was the other way around, for some reason i thought a yorkie was the larger and a silky was smaller. Guess not. Thanks for clearing it up. I've always wondered. =] |
