how cold is too cold? We are on day 3 of Layla not getting a walk in or playing fetch outside because I think it is just too cold. The temp is only -2 C but with the windchill it is -18. For those of you in cold weather- how do you know when it is too cold to go out? I know i could bundle her up nice and warm but I don't know if the windchill is just too low. any thoughts? |
When the temps fall below 0, or the windchill is below 0, it doesn't matter how you bundle up to keep warm, your lungs can be damaged. When I lived in ND. there were always warnings not to be out in the cold for over 5 minutes. I'd just play with her inside. ;) |
No expert here but we had -20 with wind chill here a few days ago and NO WAY would I take Zoey outside. I suppose it depends on the dog too. She gets cold so easy, sometimes just looking out the window :rolleyes: |
im sure layla will tell you if shes too cold.. Its really cold here today, i try to walk lexi, but she turns around and wants to go inside,, I guess its too cold for her.. Well i live by the water so its really windy too, i guess she hates that part the most.. |

If the windchill is below 0 mine arent out. That is just too bitter cold and they put out warnings about being out when its that cold. I dont even let my daughter wait at the bus stop when its that cold I take her to school |
ok so 0 Fahrenheit is -18 Celsius which is what we have going on today- We dont' get those types of weather warnings here- it has to get to like -30 Celsius (-22 F) to get weather warnings. |
I think in a way, it depends where you live and what your pup is used to. We took Ellie for a walk a couple winters ago and it was a bit windy, but not that cold. She got so cold and I had to put her in my coat. So we just play inside. Well, that's what we usually do all year actually. We do go play in the snow for a few minutes sometimes though. |

I don't really know 'cause we usually don't get temps that cold. This morning it was 20 degrees F when I took Jackson out to potty and we stayed out for about 5 minutes, lol. With the windchill though, it was probably more like 15 degrees or maybe lower. He was fine... I, on the other hand, was wayyy too cold. Jackson's the kind of dog who gets bored easily, ha. So when we can't go outside for long, we do longer sessions of trick training... doing old tricks and learning new. It stimulates his mind, I suppose ;) We do about 15-30 minutes of that and maybe 5-10 minutes of fetch at night indoors. And I know it sounds ridiculous, but I will even take him for a car ride so he can sniff out the window. It tires him out. |
i havent got weather that cold yet but if gatsby start shivering after 3 min i bringhim in and donttake him out again until the temp goes up |

Put some dried beans in a small plastic bottle then the lid of course. They usually like things that make noise. Get a packing box that is about 15 or inches tall, put some really super treats in the bottom and let her jump in to get them. (over and over) Maybe hide something she can smell easily, all over the house and let her find them. Get her one of those little robot dogs she can follow around. :p |
