need advice quick. petco... so i am finally getting my puppy sometime by xmas time or a week after. im still discussing the best time for her to be shipped. so i need advice this is my very first puppy all to myself . ive always had boy dogs. this is my first girl dog. i was reading and petco provide training sessions for new moms and puppies should i do this . i want to be really close with my puppy. |
The problem with Petsmart, Petco or any other chain is that it is hard to say whether they are good or not across the board, every trainer is different... some have great trainers, some are awful and some are in between. I would recommend you find out when the classes are and go watch a few now and see if you like what you see. |
How old will your pup be when she is shipped to you? |
I asked my vet and he actually recommended a private trainer. I have had a long relationship with my vet and thus I trust his opinion very much. I am not sure if you have an established relationship with a vet but maybe it is an option for you. |
Make sure your baby has all of her shots before you put her in training. I would also sit in a couple of classes before taking her just to check it out :) But deff make sure she is 100% vaccinated.... I am sure you know that already :) Goodluck! I am thinking of taking mine to training, too. She's a pain in my freaking neck with potty training haha. |

12 weeks isn't bad. I'm not one for shipping pups, but that's not that young. that's about the time to go from mom I think. But no I haven't heard of the breeders. Anyway, if you have the time, why not train yourself? I have my own shop so I bring Uni with me everyday. Me and my bf trained her ourselves. Train during mealtimes with just kibble, no treats. Not to say Uni is perfect, she's not, she's crazy in fact, but she is really good at trick training. Here's a vid of her at 4 months. We got her at 3 months (12 weeks, same as you :) ) She knows way more now. but yes, agree with the other posters, the petsmart classes depend on the trainer, just like when you go to a salon, doesn't matter the salon, matters the stylist. |
Uni is adorable and smart ;) I do the same things with Zoey but still am going to do the training right after Christmas. I am interested in things like socialization and anything I may not be aware of or can not learn from YT or a book :) Thanks for sharing Uni's video - is precious!! |
thank you! :) |
omg uni is tooo cuteee . was it hard teaching her all of that . i love the crawl !! |
Awww, Uni is just too adorable. Love her deep bark. :) |

That being said, I think a puppy class with other pups is better. It gives your dog a chance at socializing with other dogs (and people) as well. Your little one will love being around other puppies I am sure. Whatever you decide, best of luck and congrats on your new addition. Have you picked out a name yet? Can't wait to see pics. hugs. |
The New Arrival... She'll actually be closer to 15 wks prior to transport and will have all four rounds of vacs + bordetella.... I am so glad you are looking into training, as just getting a basic understanding is an excellent idea... Then, you can take that info and work on skills at home... She is already a very smart little gal as she is comfortable on a leash / harness and doing well with potty training... I know you are looking forward to her arrival.... She'll be on her way very soon! |

I agree 100% with you. :)I work at Petsmart part time for extra money and we have had a few trainers now and the one we currently have is the only one I actually like in all of them. She is the onyl one left because she knows how to do her job. I think it is good to look in the trainers background and see how much experience they have with dogs... Every trainer that works at petsmart or petco, etc. all have been trained to get the job so of course they ALL have certificates and graduated from a 1 month class. But you need to really meet with them and trust them and see what they can really do. They will let you watch a class for free to see how you feel about it for sure!! Good Luck:D |

It didn't take long to teach her those tricks. She's about 4 months in that vid, so we got her to do all that in one month. We did work with her every day, at every mealtime. That young, I think she was fed 3 or 4 times a day. |
