Adopted a 8yr old yorkie

I am new to the site and wanted to introduce myself. I adopted a 8 yr old yorkie (first told she was a silky, but Dr. confirmed yesterday that she is a yorkie) on Tuesday and I am so excied about it. Well, when I adopted her, they told me she is 4 years old, but yesterday I took her to the vet for a check up and the vet says she is much older, more like 8. I don't mind, because being her age, no one would adopt her and she would most likely get killed at the county shelter. I went to the shelter after seeing her sad eyes on the website. She wasn't ready for adoption because she was not spayed. Keep in mind, she was just abandoned at the shelter the day before.
I took this poor baby home and since I can't groom her yet, I used the waterless shampoo and slicker brush to get out some dangles. She has matted hair all over her rear end. I can't get those out, but I brushed the rest of her and wiped the dirt out of her face and eyes...she looked soooo happy to have that done. I took her to the park for a walk and she just ran...I got a good workout! lol.
The vet told me that it seemed she had tumors too because she has 3 incisions on her underside...one close to her upper breast. He said this is common if they are not spayed earlier.
So...I need help with feeding her. She won't eat dryfood or treats. She picks at some wet food. I have a cat, so Coco was eating cat food! I quickly stopped that. Can anyone suggest what I can do, because at this point, she is probably soo use to what she was being fed before.
I have been brushing the areas I can brush until around Sunday or Monday when I will have her groomed. She seems to really enjoy that. She took over my cat's bed, but that's ok, becuz she never used it anyhow. Now she is running all over and looks even happier :thumbup:. I will attach a picture

Congrats on your new addition to the family. She's a cutie.

You can try mixing some dry food with some canned puppy food to get her to start eating. Just be cautious that she may have some diarehha because you don't know what she was eating before. Get some nutri-cal. This will help if she has any low blood sugar attacks. Talk to her and explain what's going on.

Many of the pet stores will give you samples. Did the vet say how her teeth were? And did they spay her? or will you be taking her back for that?

She has had a lot of upheaval, she may juts not be settled enough to eat. What types of dog food have you offered?

A slicker brush isn't the best, it can cause breakage. Are you using a detangler, as well?

Congratulations on your new family addition. She sure is a pretty little girl, and sounds like she's so happy now that she has a home and family to call her own. Bless you for giving it to her.
As for feeding, I'd just home cook and not worry about any kind of dog food. She deserves "the" best!!

No, he did not comment on her teeth. He looked at her eye and saw the cloudiness which told her age. I am trying Science Diet small bites. I also bought some Cesar and Pedigree wet food to see what works for her. She picks at both. She got spayed on Tuesday morning which is why I can't groom her as yet. What other brush should I get? The waterless shampoo has detangler in it, so that helped with some of the looser mats. Otherwise, the dreadlocks looking mats, I will wait until I take her to the groomer.

I agree, maybe get samples from everywhere...I know there is a thread here about food and calling the companies and they will send you samples...I got an entire case sent to my house from one of them!
Boiled chicken is also a hit if you can't seem to get her to eat!

Awwww what a sweet story. Congratulations on adopting this adorable little
girl. Thank you also for possibly saving her life. Look at the big smile
on her face. It's frustrating to find the right food I know.
Those that you mentioned are not the best on the market. Maybe a higher
end food mixed with boiled chicken and some veggies, peas, green beans,
carrots may get her to enjoy her food more. Also some low sodium chicken
broth added to enhance the flavor should get her to eat too.
Natural Balance is a good brand as well as so many other's.
I believe there a sticky listed in the Yorkie health and diet forum that
will give you a list of all the better foods to help you find one that fits
her needs.

Keep in mind most vets use teeth to determine age and Yorkies have big dental problems. Many Yorkies will lose all of their teeth at a very young age because they needed to be pulled. So she could be four but it depends on where the shelter got that info.

She really is pretty and I know you you will have wonderful relation with her.

When my sister got her first yorkie he didn't ear for 2 days...one the third she was baking a chicken...that did it. I guess a few bites of that made him realize that he was really home. ENJOY!

Congratulations she is a pretty girl. Bless you for adopting her. I found California Natural was a food all mine will eat. I am fostering a pom puppy and they gave me Science Diet and she wouldn't eat it so I gave her the California Natural canned and she loved it. I am so happy you found each other.

Coco is BEAUTIFUL, she is so lucky to have you now (and you her).

I saw that someone suggested you get samples of dog food, that is what I had to do in order to find something Sophie Kate likes (and she still changes her mind about every two months).

It maybe also she is still a little sore from her surgery and doesn't feel like eating yet (went through that also).

I am so happy that you have Coco. In my opinion you are treating her the way a dog would want to be treated, keeping her clean, taking her for walks and just loving her.

Congratulation on adopting and older yorkie. I too adopted an older yorkie...Brandi. She was 7 when I got her last year. The first thing I did like you was to take her to the vet. Well $1200 later, she has a clean bill of health. It wasn't 1200 dollars all at one time but that's how much it took to get her healthy. That's including doggie supplies such as bedding, ex-pen, food dish, spaying, all shots, her teeth and grooming (she was so badly matted and stunk like a skunk that she had to have all of her hair shaved off).

It's very important to get her teeth checked. Most of the vet bills was because of her teeth. All but 4 teeth had to be pulled. So make sure you get her teeth checked. Brandi could not and would not eat hard food because her teeth were rotten. I feed her Canidae's Chicken and Broth and she loves it. Also I noticed since I started feeding her Canidae's, she gets very little eye gunk now. She was a rescue as well and very badly neglected. Now she is a very healthy and happy yorkie who knows she is loved and cared for. Heck she is even turning into a diva. She is no longer afraid of the original diva....my cat Zoey.

Also I wanted to add that in order to get Brandi to stop eating the cat food, I move Zoey's food dish up high on a shelf I have in the sunroom. I never worry about the cat eating the dog food because Brandi is so greedy she eats all her food at one time...nothing left for the cat to steal :p.

Your baby is beautiful and wait until she gets groom. You will fall in love with her even more. You shouldve of seen Brandi the first day I got her home. Poor baby, she looked like she had been out on the streets her whole life (actually she was kept in a crate her whole life :mad: to breed) and she stunk up the whole house.
