Thin coated owners how do you groom your yorkie? Bailey has a thin coat, and it is a sloooooow growing coat, I have no idea how to get him groomed. ( I've been doing just the basic trimming on him ) I want the coat to grow, it is at such an awkward stage now above his eyes, to short to pin up, but long enough that it falls forward into his eyes, he looks like a little straggle boots :p Any suggestions on what to do? Do thin coated yorkies look better with longer or shorter coats? http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/album.php?albumid=6600 |
" Sniff " Bailey cannot be the only thin coated yorkie...can he!? |

Now if you decide to keep him short, because of his coat texture (silk) it'll lay flat...not fluffy like when he was a wee pup. |
Hang in there Darlene, and let it grow! Apple was the same way, and she is now 13 months old, and her hair gets more gorgeous everyday...I did have her baby hair cut off @ 9 months, which kinda "cleaned up her look" w/her ears tipped, paws, hiney, and hair between the eyes...By baby hair, I mean all the dark hair she was born with, stopping where the silver/steel/gray hair started (the new growth)...I'm so glad she's got thin/fine hair, because it's gorgeous, but I do have to give her a quick brush, everyday, so she never has mats...Buzz, on the other hand, has really dark thick, kinda course silky hair, which won't matt easily...It's not as pretty as Apple, but I'm sure his adult coat will be very handsome, long and manly, kinda like Yanni (is that right)...You know, the one who plays the piano lolol...But, intqw, thin hair looks better long :)... |

BTW, Did you post pics of little Buzz?? |
Buster has the thin coat. He was two on December 1, so I don't know if it will change or not. I keep him cut short as his coat tends to mat. Maggie has a really silky coat and does not mat. I have kept them both cut short as it gets hot here in the summer. I took them last week to get groomed and I still had him cut pretty short. Not to mention the fact that he does not like to be brushed/combed. I think he looks better with the short coat but I would like to try to let it grow for the next couple of months just to see. |

Thanks for sharing, Bailey doesn't matt, I think if he did I would definitely keep him short. |

I have two with the slow growing coats, but they are so silky and easy to care for. I'm hoping they will get long some day. They will be gorgeous. |

Roxy is another thin coated silky. Her hair grows painfully slow. Can't remember anything I've ever been interested in that didn't turn out to require monumental amounts of patience. She was 1 yr Nov 1 & I still have not had her hair cut. Just butt trims & a little bit on the face which I do myself. Her hair is so slickery I have a hard time doing any kind of top knot, besides it not growing either. Have given up on those for now. Took her to groomer around 5-6 mo old more of an introduction than anything. Regretted having her do the little bit of cutting I asked for. Didn't realize then just how slow it was going to grow. The upside has been saving money on groomer, she doesn't mat. Have thought about trimming up the ends, but haven't done it yet. I think it's beginning to look a little fuller now, but it might just be our cold weather/heated houses. Hang in there, but know you are not alone. |
Uni's coat is thin and slow growing as well. I used to keep her in a puppy cut, but once I joined YT and saw how beautiful the long coat was (which I used to not like, can you believe that???) I decided to try and grow it out. She was itching a lot on her previous food, causing her to break off hairs at the shoulders. Now that she is on better food, she has stopped scratching a lot and let's hope the hair grows back to match her long butt hairs. Her ears however grow fast! I have to trim the tips often, and since her ears are already so huge, it makes them look even huger! I use the madan brush from mimimomo a few times a day. I never have problems with mats. Also I don't keep shirts on her for too long, and I brush with grooming spray right after the shirt comes off. Oh she will be 3 in Feb. |
