bad vet visit

Today Pann had his last puppy shots at the vet today (he still has to go back for rabies shot next week tho) We got their early I made a point to tell them that I knew I was early and was in no rush because I didn't want to end their lunch break early. They decided to take us in early. They started off well as they always have been, praising Pann and his cute jacket and bow. They weighed him and asked me about neutering him. I told them I was considering it and if i were to have it done it would be there because I trusted them I liked them. Then things went downhill. They asked if I needed his nails trimmed I said yes, they took him in the back to do it which they have never done and then brought him back bleeding! they cut to far back and didn't notice or didn't care. As soon as the tech came back I asked her to put some quickstop on it and take care of it because I don't want him to get an infection. She took him back in the back (!!!) and took care of it. Bringing me back a very shook up baby. Then the vet came in and it was a new younger male. Pann was absolutely terrified of him! he tried to jump off the table to get away from him, Pann has never ever and I mean never reacted to anyone like this. Every time he touched Pann my baby freaked out!! I just couldn't believe the hole fiasco, we have been there once a mounth since I've had Pann and my aunt has been going there for years and no problem, but today they treated Pann with such little care I was/am very upset. Now I am questioning if I want to even neuter him he was so devastated by his nail being cut short, and the staff showed absolutely no care in the matter! I needed to vent this has any one else had a bad vet visit?!

I'm sorry things didn't go well today. :(

It is very common to take animals in the back for everything but the exam and vaccines (varies by vet). This is done to hopefully calm the animal down (since sometimes they don't behave as well with their owners right there). But more importantly it is done because if an animal bites its owner while it's under the vets care (exam or whatever), the vet can be sued. They just have no way of knowing who to trust and what might happen.

Hitting the quick happens all the time in vets offices even with experienced staff. I prefer to do Ellie's nails myself because I take my time and try to avoid it. They are moving quickly and stuff happens. It's really how they dealt with it that would indicate if it's an okay place. Taking him back to the back should be okay, but of course they should not give you a hard time about wanting it fixed.

I have had bad vet visitis and it does leave you so upset. :( The last one that I had like this, I left shaking and crying. If you are not 100% comfortable, I would NOT take your fur baby back there!! Can you imagine how much you would stress, knowing that people that you don't completely trust have put him under for a major surgery?! I would also worry about the fact that Pann seemed to sense something about that vet...dogs are smart.

Today was the first time they took him in the back every other time they did everything in the room with me, so I was confused and then they brought him back bleeding and shook up. :( just left me very unhappy and Pann very stressed out.

Maybe the new young vet was the one who cut Pann, and when Pann saw him again, he freaked? Sorry he got hurt. This is why I cut Uni's nails myself. Sometimes I can only get one or two, then I will try again the next day.

I would just go with what you are comfortable with on this one. Our dogs can't talk to us, but they can give us obvious signals....and if he was scared of the vet, then I (personally) would go with that.

I am sorry you guys had an upsetting visit. :(

I would be upset, too. Our vet never takes Sophie to any exam room without me. He always makes sure I am in the room with her no matter what (with the exception of her being spayed and a couple of baby teeth pulled.) It's always at his invitation but I also wouldn't have it any other way.

when i got chi chi the people who had her before never cut her nails because they wear afraid to cut the quick so when i took her to the groomer the first time they told me to take her to the vet because her quick was too long when i took her to the vet they told me that her quick would not recede like it should be cause it was allowed to grow so long so she put her under and cut her nails quick and all down to a normal size stitched it bandaged it and sent her home so when i went back it was another vet and she looked at me as she was removing the stitches and said "why would you do this to your pet you could have filed them they would have receded in time impatient people just hurt there pets" and gave me a disgusted look

Misslissia-That's horrible  I'm sure you felt just awful hearing that statement! I hope you told them it was their office who recommended it and your only took what you "thought" was professional advice from them:eek: .

I am going to take a shot in the dark but here is my opinion. :)
You said that you had never seen this particular vet in the past. Maybe it is his preference to have the dogs taken to the back for things like nail trimming and the techs were only following HIS protocol. I would have to agree that it is very easy to hit the quick and yes painful just like cutting your nails too short. The quick will bleed but sometimes it will not bleed immediately.

I really feel bad that you had a bad experience with your baby but if this was the first time I think you should try to put it behind you. I'm guessing on this as well but maybe the reason that he was afraid of the vet was what had happened when they trimmed his nails.

Neutering is a very important part of owning a pet and should be done for their overall health. If you were not satisfied with your vet visit then my suggestion would be that you only made further appointments with the vet that you feel MOST comfortable seeing. If he is not available do not settle for anyone else. It is your choice as to whom you see and trust your little one to and you are not obliged to just settle for less than you expect for his care.

Couldn't agree more!!

:thumbup:Trust Pann's reaction and base your decision on that. Even if it meant driving quite a distance I would go to a new vet. He's your baby and you do what is best for him.

I went to the vet for the "first" time last week (never had a dog before). I was surprised when he put his nose right up against Ruger's nose and was talking softly and bonding with him before he even did anything. Of course he may have been doing something else, but it looked good to me.

I've taken my girlfriend's dog to the vet numerous times, and we've always been in the room when they do anything. I'm surprised they didn't invite you. I would assume the dog is always more comfortable and easier to work with when the owner is present.

This is just horrible!! I would feel sooo mad! I really don't like when people are working with animals and really have NO time at all for them! When I took Lucky for his picture with Santa the girl there said very openly that she dispised cats and dogs....no matter how cute. Se would practaly cringe when a doggie wagged his tail!! That rubbed me the wrong way ....I felt like asking her....."what did you think would be here at this event??!!" UGH.....some people!!!!
