Help! How to brush puppy? Ares is two months old, and he hate his brush! I offer treats, and we tire him out (or try to) so we can brush him... I was wondering how do yorkies have the long beautiful coats? I would love him to look like that when he's older! :aimeeyork I was to try to train myself how to do it now, he goes to a groomer once a month, but is there a certain way to comb his hair now? Thanx all!:D |
Try giving him a bully stick while you brush him. That's what I do! :) |
I'm confused. He's 2 months old but he goes to the groomers once a month? Groomers don't allow dogs that haven't had all their shots yet, and at 2 months, I'm assuming he doesn't. Anyway, you need to start brushing as soon as possible to get them used to it. Try doing it when he's sleeping. That's how i started out doing Uni. I would even cut her nails when she was sleeping. Also you need to get the right kind of brush. If you're using a slicker brush, it's probably hurting a lot when you get to a mat. I just got a Madan brush from YTer mimimomo and Uni loves it. She thinks she's getting the spa treatment. |

Ok, sorry I wrote the wrong thing in the post... he's two months old AND will be going to the groomers once a month. lol He was chewing on my big toe while I was posting! I have a pin brush. Do you have any recommendations for conditioners? I'm gonna get a different brush and that treat or brush! Thanks everyone! :p |

Be very patient, if you come to a mat, take your time. if you try to do it too fast it will hurt them. Start getting the mat out from the ends first, working your way up towards the skin. Detangling sprays work really well too. They also condition the coat. |

Roxy didn't like to be brushed for quite awhile either. Patience, persistance, praise, treats, & she eventually accepted it as just part of life. She does real well now. Still not real fond my working on her face, but she's coming along. She used to be more interested in chewing the brush than anything... like the brush part not the handle part. I wondered if that counted as flosssing. lol I didn't like using the slicker brush on her. She doesn't have a real thick coat & the ends of the pins were just too harsh for her skin. If you have a slicker, lightly run it down your arm. Doesn't feel good at all. I eventually got a Chris Christensen wooden pin brush which is the first one I got that I liked. Actually it was a tug-a-war as to whether the brush would for her or me. I let her win, but may get me one too. :) I also use a comb on her too after brushing. Be prepared for a training period for harnesses, collars, & leashes too. Keep at it a little at a time, & he'll get over it. Time & patience. |
I must be a real orge! My girls wouldn't let me brush them no matter how nice I was, so I got not so nice. I put them on my lap and forced them to tolerate brushing. Now I brush them every night. I have them lay on my lap and start from the bottom and work my way up. Jo Jo Bean actually goes to sleep now while I'm brushing her. I don't think they would be so easy to groom if I had let them get away with their bad behaviour in the beginning. I also redo the top-knots every night. |

When Kona was smaller we used a comb from rite aid on him every day. It was one of those black combs, the kind you get for free at hotels. It worked perfect. With knots we take a small round tipped shear and go from in out to cut through it. Now we use a flea comb every morning to comb him. It works even better and he rarely has knots bc it's such a little comb that we use all over. And we like it because it doesn't pulling a large area of fur. Also w/ him not liking it, he hold him under the neck with one hand and groom him with the other. He's really good about not squirming since he started holding him like that. |
