Another Housebreaking Question!!
 

I've been reading the forums in hopes of finding answers but every dog is different so it may be best if I tell me story....

My yorkie is 3 1/2 years old, I've had him for 2 years and we've come a long way but not quite there yet. In the beginning he was completely ruining my house, peeing and pooping EVERYWHERE!!! We confined him to the kitchen since he didn't seem to go on the tile floor as much. Well that has worked for the most part, accidents here or there. But if I let him into the rest of the house, he will pee!!! The vet says he may not know the difference between grass and carpet but he seems to pee just to pee!! I could see if we didn't let him out but he'll go outside, let him on the carpet and he'll go again!!! I don't know what to do anymore and I feel so bad keeping him locked in the kitchen.

Any suggestions?

Been neutered? That sometimes helps. If he's been neutered, you really have only one solution left that I can see and that is to take him out regularly and perhaps reward him with a bite of cheese when he goes outside. You'll have to keep him limited in the kitchen until he is housebroken.
The carpets will need to be cleaned thoroughly and professionally with pet stain cleaner to remove any odor and stains. :)

Yep, he's neutured. Sometimes I wonder if they left something though because he loves to hump people!!!!

I did get lazy on rewarding him when he comes in.

He has been confined to the kitchen for the last year!!! It's starting to look like he'll always live there!!

As for the carpets, I have them cleaned twice a year and when an accident happens, I always clean it immediately with pet carpet cleaner.

Is he home by himself during the day?

Generally, even the most difficult yorkie, can be housebroken if someone is home with them during the day. The 24-hour schedule and someone dogging them constantly will soak in. :) If you work, is there someone that could keep him during the day and housebreak him?

How did you come to get him at 1.5 years old? He's a doll. That's for sure.

He's not technically home by himself all day... I get up at 6:30 (and if I'm not up on at my alarm, he barks at me!), he goes out and does both, poop & pee. My dh works night shift so he gets up at 11 and let's him out, he's then let out between 2-3 before he leaves for work, then out at 5 when I get home, out at 10 before bed and dh let's him out again when he gets home around 2am. So he is out on a pretty regular schedule. We've got that part down and does very well on the schedule, it's just when you try to let him in the rest of the house... he'll pee... even if he was just outside!!

I found him in the paper, he was being raised to be a stud dog but the breeder found a better breed from England, so she got rid of him. He is a sweetheart, I just wish we could enjoy him more and make him more part of the family!

I know he must be a sweetie. The only other suggestion I would have is to get a black light and look at your carpets for stains. You will probably be shocked! I would then consult and hire a company to come in and clean it thoroughly with a pet stain removal special cleaning.

It sounds like you take him out, but did you train him to go to the door and ask to go out when he needs to potty? That's about all I can think of. There has to be a breakthrough with him. They are too smart not to understand.

Also, you could put bellybands on him when you let him in the rest of house. :)

He has not been 'trained' but he will bark at me to let him out.

The black light is a good idea which reminds me that we also moved into this house 6 months before we got him and the previous owners had a dog.... hmmmmm....

If the previous owners had a dog, your baby is marking your new place to be his.
I would really get the carpets cleaned. They might not have done a good job on them before you moved in.

I think hes marking too. He probably does smell the other dog and wants to make sure everyone knows its his house now. So hes spraying. I think hes cute too!

When do they stop marking? When does he realize that it is HIS house and no one else (other dogs) are there!!! :rolleyes:

You need to clean your carpets and spot clean them, NOT with a carpet cleaner, but with a special cleaner made to neutralize the urine smell in the carpets. You can get these at a pet store. If what you are using will not neutralize the odor, then your dog can smell his own urine in the carpet and think that's a good place to go. You should be using something like Nature's Miracle or Simply Solution. When you get your carpets professionally cleaned, you need to ask them if they have anything to neutralize urine odors. That is the only thing that is going to work in getting rid of the urine smell. You may not be able to smell it, but your dog can.

When rewarding him, don't reward him after he comes in. You are only rewarding him for coming in the house. You must reward him as soon as he does his business. He needs to understand the reward is for going potty outside and that can only be accomplished immediately upon accomplishing the job!

I know he is an older dog, but what you are doing is essentially trying to housebreak him, so I would be taking him out more than your schedule now. The purpose is to take him out so frequently, that it becomes a habit to go outside. You have to re-train him.

Also, you can put him on a leash and have him be with you, by your side, to allow him access to other parts of your home. By keep him on the leash, you will be able to "catch him in the act" and stop him from going on the carpet and immediately take him outside and let him finish his busines. When he does give him a treat. You may have to keep him on a leash for several months until he stops using your carpet. But I think you and he can benefit greatly from this method.

You should be patience my friend. You should guide him where to pee or something. Dog can easily be trained. :D
