The Danger of X-mas when you have a Yorkie...... Yesterday, Ace managed to get a christmas ornament and was chewing on it. I took it away immediately but it got me wondering what kind of trouble they can get into during Christmas time. Anyone care to share? |
When my girls were puppies, we kept an ex pen around the tree:laugh: They just wouldn't leave it alone! Definitely NO TINSEL! If they eat it, it can wrap around their tiny little intestines and kill them:( Even if you block off the tree like we did, that stuff goes EVERYWHERE, so they can still get some. Not to mention all the extra goodies in the house during the holidays:eek: We all need to be super vigilant that they can't get to the foods, and that guests understand that they are not to feed the dogs anything. If we have lots of people over, we let the girls say hello to everyone, then they are shut into our bedroom with treats, toys, food, and water. We bring them out every now and then (holding them) so that they don't feel too left out. Holidays CAN be dangerous with these little ones---Thanks for posting this reminder for all of us to be extra careful! |
In my house christmas tree is out on the porch..LOL, no tinsel.. no poinsettias, just a very traditional christmas, when I get people over, they get to say hi to the pups and then the pups are confined to the second floor. be careful with those ornaments, they can be very dangerous for the pups.. happy holidays to you.. Hi. Yes I realised about Xmas..we usually have a large Tree decorated in the Lounge from the floor..stands about 7 ft...but this year we decided to shorten it and take the bottom layer off (it is a fake tree)...It now stands on a small table..just out of his reach..but still reaches to the ceiling..and looks nice too.! My other Yorkies in the past were never interested in Xmas deccies or anything like that..but Dustie is different..If he could get at it he would..and if it goes into the mouth then he will have it lol. I also like Xmas plants..but don't think we will get any this year..too risky. But yes it is worth thinking about... Chrisann x |
We throw a Christmas Party every year with 50-60 people attending. We have four deocorated trees from the front porch, living room, bar and outside patio. There are no ornaments on the bottom 1/3 of any trees, no tinsel, and only LARGE ceramics figurines under the trees. I also have an xpen set up outside off to the right of the patio where all five stay during the party. Guests can see them, pet them, but that's it. I have signs on the xpen reading: PETTING ZOO, PLEASE DO NOT FEED US OR TAKE US OUT. This way they don't get stepped on and they don't annoy the guests. |
Buddy was 11mos old when he ate the bottom row of lights off my pre-lit tree! He went missing from the family room, tree was in the living room, for about 5mins I got up to see where he was and he was under the living room chair chewing on something. I turned on the lights, only the tree was lit and he was chewing on a string of lights! He seemed to chew off a piece about 8" long and was chewing on wire. How he didn't chew on the little lights was truly amazing or even get shocked! I couldn't believe he would even be interested in the tree. He had ignored it for day's prior. Years ago, when the kids were younger, I rescued a terrier mix in Oct about 2yrs old. Good dog and he slept with my son or daughter. One morning my son came in to wake me, he was 27 at the time and said Mom don't get mad but Teddy took down the tree:eek: He sure did it was laying across the entire living room and he had chewed up several ornaments. They were all home made ornaments I collected during the years, no glass but I still wanted to kill him for awhile but that feeling soon passed and he lived until age 16yrs. Never heard a thing during the night but it would take a bull dozier coming through the house to wake me or my kids. I would have liked to see a video of that tho, that dog must have had a ball taking that tree down. |
I haven't put the decorations up yet because I've been worried about my little destructor. Thanks for the hints, everyone! |
