Where should my furbaby go. . . . . .when I'm off to college. I've heard most if not all colleges dont except dogs and if they do the cost is much more than anything on campus. So what should I do? I'd rather not leave him at home as home is about 8 hours away from where I would be attending college. I was thinking of asking a fellow yorkie lover who lives in Lousiana near or in New Orleans it look after him with the pay of board cost, food and everything, buuut 4 years is a long time. Grrrr. Any suggestions? |
Just curious..why did you get a dog, knowing that you would be leaving for college? |

Just asking. . . |
I'm in college and I have a dog. Maybe your parents could keep him for your first year when you live on campus and then you can find an apartment or house that allows dogs after your first year. I don't know what school you're going to, but in my experience it has been a lot cheaper living off campus even with a dog. Usually it's just an extra deposit for the dog when you first move in. |
My suggestion would be to start at your local community college. That way you can stay at home with her longer, and also it will be cheaper for all your core credits. Plus, maybe that way you can also work while going to school and save your money, that way you can bring her with you! |

Would your parents be able to watch him for you? Is there a chance that you could possibly rent an apartment (or have an apt. with a number of roomates to keep the cost down?) off of campus that allows dogs? I'm going through that right now (I'm a junior in high school). Not with the dog, with the cat. My parents would be more than willing to keep her while I'm at school, but she gets SO upset whenever I leave, I'm just concerned that she would have a very hard time with the adjustment. I've been specifically putting money aside so if it works out the way I hope it does, I am able to rent an apartment so I can take my cat with me. What if you sent your parents some money for food/vet/etc so they wouldn't feel like you just dumped your dog on them? |

My mom has actually hinted that if I pay her she would keep Cody! So I might consider that. Cody is just a momma's boy thats all and I'd hate to have to "dump" him for a year or however long it might take for me to get an apartment. |
Leaving him with your parents will be much less traumatic than losing his Mommy AND going to a new home all at once. He will feel abandoned. At least he is at home at your parent's home and has his smells and everything he knows there. DO NOT PLACE HIM IN A NEW HOME IF YOU CAN AVOID IT!! I had to leave my dog (many, many years ago) for one year. And did not see her for that full school year. At first she was sad and then she adjusted. When I came home she was wild with excitement. Life was fine when it was all said and done. |

And I see what you would be saying! |
