Bathing and brushing :animal36My four year old male yorkie as never liled being bathed or beiing brushed. But the problems im facing is that his hair is getting all tangled because he wont still long enough to be able to brush him propely and i was wondering if any one could give me any advice. On how to be able to give him agood brush with out the problems of having to keep telling him to sit still or stay. Thanks Joanne |
The more you do it the easier it gets. Do you bathe him before brushing? I use a grooming arm that attaches to my counter top. That leaves both hands free to work on the coat. But I have been doing this with mine since they were puppies, so they are very used to it. If he is matted too badly then you might need to take him and have him clipped short so you can start fresh and just keep doing it regularly after that. If it is not real bad then I would work on just one section a day until you get through it all. I have 8 dogs in full coat and they all get bathed and brused every Sunday. |
Bathing and brushing We do take both of my yorkies to be clipped. But my groomer is really ill just now with cancer. So i stuck there is no other dog groomer near for us my dog who o have the trouble with as newver like being bathed or brush in the 5 years of us having him.And its never got any easier we have tried every thing but its not worked.Any other advise would be great please i was wondering what a grooming arm is. Thanks Joanne |
1 Attachment(s) Attachment 301360 I made this one with black pipe and pipe clamps. And I bought the groomers loop. But you can order the off the internet. Please ignore the messy kitchen. LOL I was too busy on YT to clean it. |
Do you work with him on your lap or the floor or on a a table. Just putting him on a table or counter might help. |
Yes, try putting him on the counter so he won't try and run away... that's what I do with mine ;) |

try using treats (high valued ones not used for anything else) brush once, treat, brush once, treat...keep doing this and gradually brush twice and treat....condition his brushing to receiving treats...work on this for a few minutes daily and by week 2 you should see a big difference...eventually you can brush over his entire body and give him a treat at the end...good luck! Sushi was the same way and now he's a changed dog with this method...I've also trained him to accept the clippers, scissors, bathing, drying, clipping nails, etc... |
Bathing and brushing We have been doing the treats for the past 5 years ever since we got him but it does not make any difference. |
Re re bathing and brushing Any more advise on the subject would be great please. Thanks Joanne:animal-pa |
Jasmine is almost a year now. We have bathed her every week and when I bath her I always take my time and talk slow and low to her never a high pitch voice. When I blow dry and brush her I always put her on a high kitchen stool so she can not go anywhere and that works out good for us. We have always made sure when we bathe Prissy and Jasmine that the house is quiet and nothing else is going on and it is just their time with us. |
Bathing and brushing I have also tried to do this way but with no luck i dont know what to do next.As i said in my earlier message my dog groomer is not well just now so she not working and there is no other dog groomer near enough for use to travel. We live in the Highlands of Scotland the neares place to us would be Perth which is quiet a few miles from us .Plus my yorkie is travel sick. Thanks Joanne:animal-pa |
Joanne- have you ever heard of a bathing tether? It has suction cups that attach to your shower wall which allows both of your hands to be free to do what's needed. Here's what 1 version looks like. http://www.rinseace.com/images/bathingTethers2.jpg I also found this which looks like it may work better for our smaller dogs Dog bathing: Bath-time supplies: Pup Tub at Drs. Oh & here's a picture of a portable grooming table http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/att...60_150x150.jpg |
