Went to a "Pet Expo" today Ok so for the past two years I have been wanting a Yorkie, and for the past yr I have been doing research. I was looking in the news paper classifieds b/c I like looking at them, and an add caught my attention, "all pet expo" then it listed all the types of dogs that would be there. since it was close by, my daughter (who is 4) and I went to check it out. We dont have "Pet stores" here in San Antonio, so this would be like the closest thing. I have been reading a lot about puppy mills and brokers and things like that. So we got there and there were all these cute little puppies and my daughter went nuts looking at all of them. Any way... I was thinking and I know some people say that if the breeder who is attending these expos are not reputable, some of the puppies looked sick, but only a few, most of them looked really good and healthy. I wouldnt buy a puppy from a pet store, b/c I know those dogs come from a puppy mill. Would these dogs more then likey be from a mill as well? |
I don't know for sure, but I don't think many reputable breeders would go to a pet expo to sell dogs. Most reputable breeders are as picky about the people who get their puppies as the person buying the puppy..... actually they are usually MORE picky. |
I would not recommend people buying a dog at a pet expo. About four years ago, I brought a Pomeranian at a pet expo, and the dog had a congenital disease. I brought the dog from Sylvia's Country Kennels. When I brought the Pomeranian, I did not know how to pick a reputable breeder. After adopting the Pomeranian, I discovered the breeder was a puppy mill. The woman who sold the Pomeranian to me was a broker. The link I provided below this paragraph shows similar complaints from people who brought dogs from this breeder at a pet expo. :( http://www.merchantcircle.com/business/Sylvia.Country.Kennels.501-556-5880/review/list |
I agree that a reputable breeder is not likely to peddle their dogs like wares at a pet expo. Look for a reputable breeder - you might even find a few YT members who are breeders in your area who are reputable or who can direct you. Good breeders will be picky - and you should be picky too! When I bought Teddy last year, we went to a great breeder with 25 years of experience breeding yorkies but our other babies were pet store dogs. Good luck finding your yorkie!!:aimeeyork |
