HELP! Yorkie dilemma
 

Hi you guys! I have a boy yorkie (5 months in 4 days) and I just got a girl yorkie and she is 3 months old. He looks like he is attacking her but then she still goes back...are they playing or is he hurting her? Or is he trying to show dominance? She is half his size so I don't want her to get hurt. Also, she doesn't have as much hair as he does....is that normal or is something wrong with her coat?

I'd have to watch their posturing to tell but it sounds like play. When we first got Teddy, he got beat up daily by Barney - he used to cry like he was being murdered. My dogs were older and it was a big disruption to have Teddy (who is really annoying) on the scene to disrupt them. It took a while but they are the best of buddies now.

As for the coat - different yorkies have different coats. Some yorkies have sparser coats due to allergies or poor breeding -like my Daisy :( - and others have locks of pure silk - like my boys!

Munchie has a shiny luxurious coat, thin strands but tons of it. They are quite kinky but doggie rinse and a good blow dryer takes care of most of it. He is not a candidate for the show ring but to us, he's the most beautiful dog in the world. News: none of the dogs we were going to get showed up. Now we have a 10 month old Cairns, crazy and Munchie is his alpha. I am telling you guys 4.3 lbs of pure terrrrrr iorr. LOL

She likes to steal his toys and they were his toys from the very beginning because we just got her. Now we bought more toys but she still steal whatever he's playing with...I think he gets annoyed so he bites her sometimes. What should I do? Does your yorkies ever get jealous when you attend to the other one? I want to avoid so if you got some tips-- that'd be great!! Thanks!!

My puppy Lucy also has a thinner coat...... it is kind of coarse.
WHen I got Hendrix (he is 4 now) his coat was really thick and soft and curly. Lucy's coat (she is 6 months) is the opposite. At first I didn't like it, but now it is amazing because it grows slow so there is less maintenance and I think it gives her character :)

As far as the playing...... I would just keep an eye on them, but I am sure that it is fine. If they were fighting you would know it--- it gets very viscous very quickly. Look for the cliche body language like them putting their bums in the air and stuff.... that is them inviting the other to play. Also, I have read that mounting each other is totally normal and can be because they are showing dominance or just because they are excited........ it is totally normal for them to be showing dominance to each other- they both want to be top dog! hehe.

Also, as far as the jealousy thing---
I just went through all of this same stuff when I brought Lucy home a few months ago....
Make sure that you always give your first Yorkie attention BEFORE you give the new puppy attention. My vet told me that it is very important.
I let them steal each others toys and I let them fight it out--- that is what dogs do!
However, Lucy can sometimes bully my other yorkie, Hendrix and if she is stealing ALL the toys from him and being mean then I will usually interfere and give him back his toys and tell the little brat to be nice :)

Mine are such a handful too, but I would just die without them! THey are the loves of my life!

And, when I brought Lucy home, Hendrix HATED her! He wanted nothing to do with her and 2 weeks later they were best friends..... having two was the best decision I ever made.... it is so much more fun with them both!

I saw your picture of Lucy. How old was she when you got her and how much did she weigh? Yeah my baby boy isn't quite used to her yet...he was always the only one and he was SPOILED and now he has to share but he is getting better. he weighs 1 lb more than her but seems much bigger, so I'm afraid that he will hurt her on accident so I kind of baby her. However, I don't want him to think we love her more...they are like children!!

Oh I know---- it is SO hard!
When I we got Lucy she was about 3 pound.... maybe a little less. She plays very rough-- she was the runt of her litter and had 3 big brothers haha---- My little Hendrix is only 2.5 pounds, so he is actually the smaller one haha.
Lucy is now 6 months and weighs 4.2 pounds I think. SHe is still the same size as Hendrix, she just has thicker bones.... which I LOVE... makes her a little more sturdy than Hendrix. Hendrix is so tiny I always worry about him getting hurt.


I really wouldn't worry about them hurting each other though. My vet told me that it is like when they play bite--- they know the limit of how hard to bite each other with out hurting each other. To us it looks like they are about to draw blood, but to them they are just playing......
Always keep an eye on them.... but I am sure you have nothing to worry about.
Try and not baby her--- your baby boy will not hurt her on purpose..... and honestly, I let Hendrix put Lucy in line when she annoys him and stuff....... If she steals his toy, I let him bite her in the butt--- they need to learn who is boss haha.

I have a Westie and a Yorkie and they steal each others toys all the time. Usually, it's the Westie - he's bigger and the more dominant) and he will just walk right over and take them out of her mouth. Gently. He gets all the good toys and take them up on his chair where she can't reach them. She is ok with that because he is the alpha dog. Every now and then she will surprise him and jump high enough to get onto his chair.

Remember - it's not his toys or her toys but THEIR toys now.

Of course, the only toy she wants to play with will be the one he has at the moment despite how many toys are on the floor!

They are too funny. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you hear extreme yelping or fighting sounds. Try not to intervene unless you have to.

Mine growl at each other the whole time they are playing - sounds terrible - but it is just play.

Every now and then the Westie will display some dominance when she steps over the line and THAT is scary to me. He will stand over top of her and growl like crazy and she will roll onto her back. BUT he has never bitten her and that would be a situation in which I would definitely step in if he did.

Sometimes I can tell that the Westie's play has gotten too rough for Lucy; I can see her trying to hide or run away and that's when it's time to distract them with something else or find a new game to play - or maybe just everyone needs to settle down for a little nap. The Westie starts to get very excited after they play for a while and he's jumping all around her and over top of her and she gets scared. That's when we find a different game to play.

But mine have a huge size difference that you won't have to worry about.
