Home Alone Help Ok, well Wookie will be 10 weeks tomorrow. Since we've had him we have only left him alone once for about 3 hours when we went to the movies. Even then we kept the lights on and both TVs on so he thought we were there lol He's such a good puppy. He rarely ever whines we he's in his pen or crate. Right now my boyfriend only works part time in the morning. When he's not home I take Wookie with me to work and Ron comes and gets him at lunch. I'm scared to leave him home alone! We told our upstairs neighbors about him and to let us know if he ever barks or gets too loud. Ahhh, so my question is how should I transition him to being alone for extended amounts of time? Right now it looks like the longest he would be home alone is 5 hours. Any longer and I would just take him to work. I don't think he's ready to be in the pen alone. Right now he pees and poos outside, and will pee on the potty pad in his pen. But he refuses to poo in his pen (yay). Usually when he sleeps he is in a big crate with his bed and a potty pad. |
do you have an ex-pen set up? |
Make regular "lock-ups" normal, when you are home, or away for a while. Don't make a fuss, just lock up , and walk away! When it is normal, you can extend the time. When my 1 year old was a pup, he had regular lock-up, on w/e's to keep with his week day schedual, till he was 6 months, he never missed his afternoon nap! Routine is really important, at this age. Good Luck! |
I think you should start leaving him alone for short periods of time... crated or in x-pen. He's too young to be roaming the house. If he's never left alone, he will never learn to how to be alone. I didn't want Roxy developing separation anxiety, so wanted her to learn being alone was OK. Leave TV, lights on or whatever replicates normal sounds when you are home. He will learn it's OK. What is it that makes you afraid to leave him alone? I wasn't afraid until the day came we had to leave for about an hour or so & decided to leave her out of the crate. She was fine when we returned & so was the house. Hallway is gated, so she only had access to 3 rooms. Gradually we built up to longer periods of time. She does fine. |
I'm afraid he will scream and bother the neighbors. His screams sound awful lol I would most likely leave him in his crate when I go and not the expen. I dunno I just feel very nervous. He is so young and it seems like it is such a long time. |
I always left my pups in their crates when away from home to go to work or whatnot. I did not feel comfortable to leave them in an ex pen either. I also leave soft music on (it's an anti anxiety CD for dogs actually).... I put the CD on and wait a few mins until they start napping and then I just leave. I never made a big production out of coming or going so they adapted very quickly. Good luck!! |
