I could really use a place to vent this.... I have a "friend" who I've known for about a year. When we first met, I was sure she loved animals, as she had two dogs. A chihuahua and a Pomeranian. Well, mysteriously for some reason or another, about a month later, there was only the Pom and suddenly she had another Pom. Okay...whatever... So then she had yet ANOTHER new Pom, meanning she got rid of a THIRD dog for whatever reason. It was always an excuse of "the dog doesn't like my husband", "the dog won't house train", "the dog doesn't get along with my other dog". There's three dogs that I know of that she's gone through in the past nine months. She always stuck to her original dog, the Pom she claimed was the love of her life. Well upon her very first heat at seven months, her Pom girl got pregnant and a couple of months ago delivered a litter of four puppies. This girl decided to keep two of them. I won't even get into how irresponsible I think it was to allow her dog to breed, but just yesterday she wrote a status update on facebook about how her husband is making her get rid of her Pom (the original one who had the puppies) because the dog bit her. The dog just had a litter of puppies, her hormones aren't back to normal, she clearly hasn't been cared for the way she should have been, and who here can honestly say your dog hasn't at one point bit you? It happens, and I think that dog probably had every reason to. So I feel like she made an immature dog have puppies just so she could keep the puppies and now she's shipping off the dog. The kicker of all of this, is she's been trying to get pregnant with a child for almost a year. I made a comment something to the effect of "What are you going to do when you have a child that acts up? Ship them off too?" I also urged her to get the dog medical attention since she had just been through so much. Was I out of line? I've wanted so many times in the past to comment on her behavior with her pets, but this was too much, she's had this dog since she was 7 weeks old and now is shipping her off because of one little incident. This girl is clearly not fit to be a parent to anything. She specifically made a snarky comment back about how a child wouldn't bite her and she can't afford to handle all of the problems the dog may be having....yet she's keeping TWO puppies?!?! This situation has infuriated me...and I really don't feel like I have anyone I can talk to about it. It may not affect me personally, but watching animal after animal pass through her home, and now her getting rid of her "main" dog...........:thumbdown My cats all have issues. One has an anxiety issue which causes her to mark in inappropriate places, yet I deal with it and get her the right treatments, even though it may inconvenience me. My puppy has torn up our carpets and chewed our walls. I deal with it because it is my responsibility to and I love them DEARLY. Part of having animals (and children) is to teach them the right way to behave, not ship them out when they do something wrong. She got very snippy with me after I made that comment and everyone else we mutually know seems to be coddling her and thinking she's making the right decision. Am I the only one that thinks that is INSANE?! My husband urges me to just let it go, it's not worth getting upset over, but for some reason, this just really gets to me. |
Totally understand where you are coming from... I get a little peeved when people get dogs just because they are cute... when people get a cute puppy.. they have to remember that they are going to grow up to be chewing dogs that might get into some of your stuff and can be a pain in the butt... they require feeding, taking out to go potty, playing, toys, doctors visits and all that good stuff just like a child... BUT there are some people that are just too immature to even take care of one dog let alone multiple AND children... im a firm believer that people should be given a test before they get a puppy OR before they have a baby... At the same time... what you say to her, is she even going to listen, is any of it even going to sink in? probably not.. but at least now you know that you dont need a friend like that.. and the friends that are mutual and are giving her sympathy.. thats exactly what she wants... they will realize this and it will probably be too late... |
I have a friend like this as well... She has gone through probably 10 dogs over the past several years, and she recently allowed her bichon and pug to mate because she thought they would make "cute" puppies. I really have wanted to say something to her... but I know it will not go anywhere. I compltely know what you mean... I just do not understand some people. |
How sad; too bad someone who feels the same as you couldn't arrange a visit to the local humane society for this person to see all the "thrown away" animals. It's a shame her husband doesn't speak up. |
I'd rather have a friend that didn't like animals and never had any than a friend that would consider them so easy to dispose of. Time to re-think your Christmas list. |

Her husband is part of the problem. It's always "his decision" as to why they're getting rid of whatever dog. She always says he is "making her", but honestly I think she WANTS TO and uses him as an excuse, because he's never really cared for the dogs anyway. They both need to grow up. I don't think I can associate with this person anymore, which may seem drastic but it sickens me that these two are trying to bring children into the world when they can't even handle taking care of a dog. She claims the Pom is now going to a good home with a nice big yard full of love, but she says that about every dog she seemingly throws away and I've stopped believing her at this point. I think she says that just so people won't judge her, and like I said, it is infuriating when I see mutual friends pity and coddle her for having to make such a "hard decision", when the decision itself is RIDICULOUS! It makes my blood boil.:thumbdown I would really hope if I were being so selfish and immature, someone I was "friends" with would say something to me. I first offered constructive advice to take the dog to the vet because there's probably an underlying issue since she just recently gave birth, and she clearly didn't want to hear that claiming they can't afford the vet bills, and now she'll have a scar for the rest of her life from the bite. Get over it and be responsible! GAH! There's just no reasoning with her. |

Kids do bite and they pee and poop in inappropriate places and they tear up things and break things and spill things and they get sick........... and the list goes on. heaven help her chilcren. |
My guess is these people like puppies only, to bad, I once had a bil like that. i bet once the 2 puppies she is keeping gets out of the puppy stage they will be gone to |
Its sad how some people think pets are disposable. It would be hard for me to have anything to do with her either |
I completely agree with you. She sounds like a lazy person that never follows through with everything. Like a child that gets bored with something after its luster wears off. You better believe if my husband told me to get rid of my dog HE'D be out the door so fast it wouldn't even have time to hit him in the butt! And if she thinks dogs are bad, kids are hundred times worse! You can't crate train them :p |
wow, this is really heartbreaking. I think you are right. If they can't handle a dog, they can't handle a kid. Like it was said before, kids do bite, kick, scream, hit & pinch. Much worse things than dog! They also can't be left alone AT all! She is immature! I don't think I could hang with her either, but that is my opinion. Donna |

Thanks so much everyone! I really needed someone to listen....and I got a few of you! I'm definitely just cutting contact, I can't deal with the next time she has an issue and an animal has to suffer. I mean, if she's keeping two puppies, doesn't she understand how expensive that is going to be, or does she intend on not fixing them and going through the cycle again? Geez. |
I can understand how frustrated you are! I hate it when people have dogs and don't consider them a member of the family. I always consider when I adopt a dog or purchase a dog that it is a lifetime commitment. No dog is perfect and you work with what you got. It is sad to say that she has no clue how to be a pet owner, ypu can turn most any dog into a loving family memeber with commitment love and praise! I feel sad for her dogs, but they might be better off! I would NEVER let my husband tell me I had to get rid of any of my animals no matter what!!! |
I'll be looking for you to post about her again when her child DOES bite her! Surely someone you know will inevidently stay in touch with her & you'll hear it through the grapevine. Sounds like you've made the choice that will be the best for you but waaay too sad for the dogs involved for sure.:( |
People like that make me so mad! Yep, a child is going to bite, pee, poop, draw on the walls & furniture, and countless other things! She's got a huge shock coming when she does have a child! Some people will never learn that animals are not disposable breeding machines. Oh, and if MY husband told me I had to get rid of any of our animals, he knows he'd be the one going instead. :D But he's as much or more of an animal lover as I an so I don't have to worry about that. He even buried a stray cat that got run over in front of our house one time. He put it in a plastic bag in a coke can box incase the owner came looking for it and wanted to bury it at their house. :animal-pa |
Kudos to you for reacting and following your beliefs..... too many people in this world are noncomplacient .I think I have come to a point in my life where if I dont respect you we can't possibly be friends. |

Let's not forget that when the kids are sick there's BIG doctor bills. Their health is not guaranteed. :] |
You just need to hit DELETE and be done with her  |
Well I know someone who treats her dogs that way and she is not a good mother. Also I beg to differ with her comment about her child not biting her. Just ask any mother with a toddler. Chances are they have probably been bitten by their child. It is so infuriating to watch. These kinds of people. |
If she were my friend I would have reported her to the local animal cruelty center. I am sorry, but this is just awful! Those poor dogs get so attached to her and then she just gets rid of them like they mean nothing! I can't even stand it! REPORT HER so she can not abuse any more poor dogs emotions and bodies! |
It's unfortunate you are in this situation, and you are most definitely right in your feelings toward her immature behavior. It's unfortunate because I'm not sure if there is a "right" way to handle this situation. You spoke up--and did the best you could. I hope she realizes her problem and corrects it, before it's too late. |
Well, fate will get her in the end. Wait until that cute little baby turns into a teenager. Hee hee. I hope she's saving up for a good boarding school!:D |
I agree with everyone. This "friend" of yours is totally immature and should NOT own dogs, and I think should DEF NOT ever have kids either! Obviously she is selfish and only thinking of herself first, and when you have kids, they are first and you put yourself dead last! And she is so horribly scarred for the rest of her life now from a Pom's bite? Puhleeze, how bad of a bite could this have been? Imagine now if she does have a kid and has a c-section, then she'll really have a big scar for the rest of her life. Will she ship the kid off then too? I think you need to tell her how you feel one last time, as your "I'm not gonna socialize with you anymore because...." Those poor poor doggies.... |
