Thoughts about Doggy Daycare? I am considering taking Penny to a doggy daycare so she can socialize with other dogs and play/have fun. Is this a good idea? |
We love our doggy daycare! A couple recommendations: * They should have at least one trainer on staff. * They should have a "small dog" section. * Penny should LOVE it there. |
Roxy absolutely loves her daycare. I usually take her one afternoon a week. It's her favorite part of the week. She plays very hard the whole time. Doesn't have sense enough to sit or rest... ever. I'm sure some daycare are better than others, but we got lucky. Dogs will need to have completed all their shots & pass a temperment test performed by the daycare to make sure the dogs get along. Ours also boards dogs, so if we can't take her she has a place to stay that she's familiar with. |
Wonderful! There is a doggy daycare by our house and they seem pretty reasonable $35 full day $20 half day. I am going to sign her up next week. We are both very excited! P.S. This is the place we are considering: Rover's Place |
You'll love the webcam feature if you are where you can be online! I love to come home & watch Roxy. That's how I know she never stops moving. Do expect Penny to be exhausted when she gets home. Most dogs are & many are not constantly on the move like Roxy is. Enjoy! |
Great idea! I would do as was mention about making sure they have a small dog section. Inspect it well too, and ask for references. |
I did a post before about doggy daycare. It might take a little getting used to for some dogs. Capone wasn't used to being around so much noise and so many dogs and he didn't play for a while. After about 3 or 4 times he warmed up and plays well with the other dogs. He does tend to bark a little more when he comes home from daycare, but I just have to remind him we aren't at daycare anymore. |
We love doggy daycare. I agree with the others who shared that you should make sure there is a separate area for small dogs. I took a complete tour of the premises before registering Armani to make sure that I was comfortable with the facilities and the staff. It makes me feel good when I hear Armani's wagging tail hitting again her bag as we approach The Ritzy for daycare. Armani is a dog that loves being in her bag and the only time she tries to hop out of her bag is when we walk into The Ritzy for doggy daycare. Best to you and your pooch! |
Bandit LOVES his doggie daycare. When we get close he starts whining and gets so excited his little fur butt can't sit still. It's at a person's house and she has a fully enclosed yard for the dogs to play with and the basement is finished solely for the dogs. She trains the dogs while they're there and Bandit has come such a long way. Nala just started going once a month, if $ wasn't an issue she'd go more, and she will sleep from 6pm when she gets back until 6am the next morning. It's great! The only downside is that there is no small dog section, but she is very vigilant with watching Bandit and ensuring he's safe.:thumbup:for doggie daycare:thumbup::thumbup: |
I think doggie daycare is a great idea, just make sure you check it out first. Here's why... We were in Louisville during Thanksgiving and we stopped into Petsmart, one that had a vet, pethotel, and day care. Honestly, I was appalled at the day care. There was one person in there for about 15 dogs; IMO one other person would have been better. Also, they had dogs in the same room ranging from a small min pin and another toy breed that I can't remember to a HUGE great dane puppy, a big setter of some sort, and several other BIG dogs.:mad:They were going potty everywhere and a couple even threw up. I couldn't imagine what would have happened if there had been a fight. And I felt so sorry for one of the toy dogs that probably weighed between 8-10 lbs, but was smaller. She was just pawing her little heart out at the window to get out.:( I wanted to go in there and take her home with me so she'd be safe. She was terrified. Also the person in there wasn't interacting with any of the dogs. She was just standing there.:thumbdown Now, I know not all doggie daycares are like this but I would definitely check them out before I would put Sophie in one. |
I'm bumping this up because DH & I are toying around with the idea of opening a doggy daycare. He was forced to retire a year ago, and I can see from him, retirement's not all it's cracked up to be! Just trying to make something we love work for us. I'm open for any and all suggestions, comments, or whatever. Like I said, we're just toying with the idea. :) |
We signed Teddy up for doggie daycare when he was a puppy since he had a lot of fears. We did not want him to go alone, so Barney and Daisy had to go too. Each dog had a different view of the place. Teddy was a little nervous but came out of his shell, Daisy liked it the least and just hung out with a Maltese most of the time did not interact with any of the pups, and Barney loved it - they called him "the Patrolman" -- he taught the puppies new things and he maintained order amongst the daycare pups. Our doggie daycare is run by an excellent trainer and her staff and small dogs and puppies are separated from larger dogs. I felt very comfortable dropping them off and leaving them for the day. They had a lot of fun. A good place will evaluate your dog's level of interest in daycare and also whether he/she gets along with other dogs. All of our dogs are dog friendly so it was pretty easy but they were not always so tolerant with puppies (until Teddy forced that on them!). Good luck! |
