Exercise for Hyper Yorkie Okay so... Stella is sooo hyper she never calms down. She will get tired and lay down to nap and them as soon as I move she jumps up and is ready to play. When we have company over she jumps all over them for attention and does this until they leave. We have a fenced in back yard but she doesn't like to go out and get her feet wet and our road is too dangerous to take her for walks on it.. Can I put her on a treadmil?? I have one a bought for me a few years ago, but I haven't used it since we have moved here to our new home. I saw Cesar on the dog whisperer does this.. But I didn't know if that was for big dogs only.?. |
Are there dog parks around you? Is there a place you can go for walks? I remember reading somewhere that walking dogs of all sizes is a really important part of their exercise regime. There are some toys that move by themselves so she could chase it, so that might tire her out. |

I live on 3 acres of land with 90 acres of farmland behind me so I drive 5 mins up the road to walk Jackson in a nice neighborhood. Find a local neighborhood. The walks really are important... even if they have a big backyard, it doesn't make up for that pack walk. It really tires them out mentally and physically especially with all the new sights and smells. I take Jackson to the dog park as often as I can, lately it's been 2-3x a week or so. It really tires him out! Also, I read once on YT that a person would throw a toy down the stairs so the dog would run down the stairs, and back up the stairs, and got really worn out. I play fetch with Jackson when it's too cold to go outside. |
I've had my boys walk on a treadmill before...it was sorta by accident, but then we continued with it for a few minutes. I would think if you were on it with them to begin with, it might work. Just keep them on leash, and be VERY careful that they don't get hurt or anything... |
Hi, I have a Westie who loves to walk and a Yorkie who doesn't. In the dead of winter - we will put the Westie on the treadmill. We started at a super slow speed (less than 1) and gave him a little bite of treat every few minutes and praised him. While I wouldn't say he enjoyed it - he didn't seem to mind and did it for the treats. In a pinch of really bad weather - it helps. Of course, he ended up gaining weight over the winter and I can't help but wonder if it was due to all the treats he got while walking the treadmill!:) |
Unfortunetly I dont have any dog parks around me.. Or even kids parks. Moving toys, I know she would love that! She loves to chase things. I will have to find that kind of toy for her. |
I will have to do some driving and see if there are any good neighborhoods. We just moved to our new home a few months ago and we're not sure what all is around us. Stairs is a great exercise.. Unfortunetly though.. Stella hates stairs.. She refuses to go up and down mine and they are carpeted. She is soo funny, such a baby, whenever I even walk around the house if she is not biting my feet she is wanting me to carry her around. |
Hehe.. Too cute.. Well if I can get her on the treadmill should I get her some shoes?? Will her walking on the treadmil and cement make her paws crack and harden?? I was hoping shoes will also help with her pottying outside because she refuses to go out when it has been raining because she dont want to get her feet wet. |

My girls have been using a treadmill for three years now. We started them on it due to our raining winters and not being able to walk often. |
Well I tried the treamil and she hated it.. She just turned around and walked off of it when I tried her on it with out the leash.. And then I tried again will a leash and she moved over to the side of the treadmill where you rest your feet I couldn't help but laugh.. I will keep trying it every couple of days and hopefully she will like it eventually. |
My dogs sound like yours.... they are SOOOO hyper ALL the time. They never calm down. We walk them twice a day and that seems to help....... One of my neighbors told me to get them some interactive toys to keep them occupied and exercise their minds.... that keeps them out of trouble. If you put your on the treadmill I would just be really careful :) |
She's funny!!! How about walk around in the house? I mean inside of the house, when I was young, was lazy but still thought about exercising, I just walked along the wall in the aparment for a litttttle bit... It wasnt that smart though.. Quote:
