Keeping Yorkies warm How do you keep your dogs warm? It's 9 degrees here, and even I don't want to go out. I put some pee pads in the house, we'll see how that goes, but I do have to take him out at times. You can see his sweater in the photo, but it's not really that warm, and the guy at Petco said the "Winter Line" won't be in for another couple of weeks. What do most of you do who live in cold climates? He does seem to like the snow, and I just got him a week ago. |
I put sweaters on them, and if it's really cold I'll put a parka over that. Toby doesn't like snow at all, in fact we have to shovel out a spot for him to do his business in! Lola has only had 1 snow experience so far, and she hated it...kept trying to tiptoe on it. I do try to get them back inside as fast as I can, and dry them off with a towel. Usually they're ready to wrap in a small blanket til they warm up. Tried pee pads...Toby chewed them up:eek: |
When its cold Callie wears a sweater or a warm shirt but she has a doggy door and when its really cold she will just go out go potty and run back in when we went to WV I would put her jacket on her everytime she went to go out but even then she learned to go potty fast. |
We have a sweater for Buddy. My concern is wether or not it is too hot for him while he is inside. Not trying to threadjack, but what does everone think about leaving the warm clothes on? |

It doesn't really get as cold here, but generally the colder it gets the more I layer. For cold days, its a thin knit sweater under a coat. For really cold day back when I lived in Jersey I did 3 layers - thin sweater, sweatshirt, coat. |
We lived in Maine for the first 6 years of Edie's life. She would go outside to pee pee in the winter, as I was never able to train her to use wee wee pads consistently. I always put a coat on her when it was below 20 degrees F, even if she was only going outside for one minute. Above 20 F, and she was able to go outside for a short time (just a couple of minutes) without a coat. Now that we are in Arizona, she does not wear a coat at all. |
Daisy wears a fleece that wraps around and covers her belly if we go out, but she usually just uses pee pads. I bough a snowsuit and boots for her to use when it snows. I will let you know how that goes when she tries it out. |
wow...9 degrees is very cold! Joey doesn't like sweaters, but Tank does, so Tank gets his sweater when it's cold (50 degrees or so and colder, but 9 makes that sound warm!), but Joey goes without because he would just take it off himself anyways (he's a little Houdini). They make very short potty trips when it's cold, and they let me know when they're finished by going back to the door. |
When it's super, duper cold out, I put a velour tracksuit on Missy, with her winter jacket over top, and her Epic dog shoes. I carry her, and I don't make her walk in the snow. She uses pee pads indoors all the time anyways. |

When it's chilly out, Abby wears a sweater. When it's cold out she wears a coat. When it's REALLY cold out, she wears a sweater and a coat. I bought her a pair of boots recently as her little pads get so cold in the winter. We'll have to see how that goes.:) :candyc1::candyc1::candyc1::candyc1: |
Wow, I can't believe we are talking FARENHEIT here with the 9 degrees and 17 degrees? yikes! In my area (the northeast) it was 65f yesterday. I am a new dog owner, so I don't know from parkas and boots. But I just wanted to chime in and say I knitted a nice warm sweater for my Yorkie and it's been doing the trick sofar (we have been down to about 39f some days). I used a chunky wool called Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride. Size 11 needles and I knitted it up in a few hours. I am going to try and make a matching one for the new puppy this weekend. I don't know how to post pics on a thread but if I could I would. |
2 Attachment(s) Sophie has a fleece winter coat and sweaters. She is goes potty pretty quickly outside though. We shovel the patio but she still likes to jump around in the snow in the yard:D |
Mine dont stay out long so I dont put anything on them. We keep our house cool though and I will put a fleece hoodie on if its cool to me |
It's 1 degree here right now. Yes, you read that right, ONE, lol. We're supposed to have a high of like 12 today. I took Galahad out this morning in his jammies with his coat over them. The ground is frosty, no snow yet though. I'm still waiting for his boots to come in, they were purchased on 11-16. |
Tuffy gets layered when it's cold out; we use 1 size larger sweater if it's REALLY cold on top of several others. He doesn't stay out more than a couple minutes. We were in OK a few days last week & the poor little guy just about got knocked over by the gusty winds! So far, no luck with the snowshoes; not to threadcap but hints would be welcome! Sherry |
My Boo LOVES the snow...i usually just put a parka on him to keep his body dry, then when we get inside put him on a towel and blow dry the snow chunks that stick to his legs...he LOVES that he can get blow dried without having to have a bath first! |
I just bought a pet-a-potty.... they are a bit pricey, but I think they are a wonderful idea! |
Thanks for all the suggestions. While the temp does get cold here, it's pretty dry. Now cold is cold, but 25 degrees back east feels like below zero here. That damp air just goes right through your bones. I think I'll dress him based on how I feel, realizing that he would have some extra insulation under whatever I put on him. My goal is to put a doggy door out to the deck on the second floor. I'll have to reinforce the railing so he can't get through. I would let him go outside into a fenced yard I would build. This would be ideal, but the little guy would probably be a snack for a coyote. |
I have an actual hoodie with fleese on the inside that I put on Nicky when it is cold out, This is my first winter with him so we really have yet to be out in the freezing cold! last winter he was to teeny tiny to be out for too long so I just had him go on wee wee pads. |
Mine are in full coat, but some of them have very thin coats. They learn to pee fast. |
Hello.. Wow, It's sure cold where you are!! Quote:
What is a pet-a-potty?? It sounds funny.. lol I can't believe how cold you guys are in different parts of the country. I'm freezing in 60 degree weather. Little Breese requires her sweater and sometimes she's still cold then comes the blanket. Would it be because she's 3.6 lbs.? Punken is fine, she never gets cold but she 5.5 lbs. All of you keep warm and by all means take care driving in the snow. Bye for now, Kathleen... Mom To My Little Girls: Punken Pie :doghop: :littleang Breese Be Be My Lil Ol Tuffy...:lovewings RIP |
Madison wears sweaters, and pjs. She also burrows under blankets, (which I always have laying around for her) when she gets cold. |
I keep my little ones inside and they use pee pads. I ordered them fleece winter jackets from kwigy-bo on clearance for $2!!!! the jackets were delivered a couple of days ago and are awesome, really good quality. Here is the link Kwigy.Bo : Shop : CLEARANCE</font |
