How to keep my yorkie occupied when I'm burnt out after work
 
When I get home from working long hours in intensive care at a hospital I am thoroughly exhausted and Penny is all worked up. Since she is a puppy all she wants to do is play play play and when I get home from work all I want to do is sleep. I also go to school, but School isn't as bad as work. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can keep her occupied when I'm burnt out after a long day?

I know you said you are tired, but honestly a good half hour walk will wipe her RIGHT out. You could also give her a kong, but i like to be able to watch Layla when she has one of those.

I usually take her for at least one long walk a day, weather permitting and schedule permitting. She plays a lot with my brothers and my mom will throw her ball around for her, but I feel like she wants ME to play with her too. I work 3 days a week (12 hour shifts) and go to school two days a week. I just don't want her to think I'm not around for her. She gives me these looks like common ma lets play and will lay her ball right at my feet for me to throw it which is sweet and adorable! :D Maybe I am just exaggerating on this a little cause I am ALWAYS with her when I'm not at work or school.:rolleyes: Thankfully there is only two more weeks of school before winter break!! :D

I play fetch with Couver when he is all riled up and I am exhausted. He really enjoys it, and it really takes minimal effort on my part :p

When I am tired and one of mine wants to play, I will take one of their toys and just play tug of war, that way O can watch TV or just sit there and they get attention.

it is so difficult isn't it? I always feel so guilty. They say taking your dog for a walk is the best way to bond with them so it is great that you are doing that. hang in there- we all feel bad or that we aren't doing enough :) I don't think that feeling ever goes away :p

Agreed! Penny and I LOOOVE our walks together! We both feel so great after. :):aimeeyork

Hmmm what I'll do when I'm burnt out but my furbaby wants to play...
I will play with her! Well just for about 15 minutes, and then hug her to sleep with me, she couldn't run so she has to close her eyes and meet me in dreamland :p

A brisk walk :animal37, 3 times a day (before and after work, and just before bed-time), seems to do the trick. As I am always tired:dogzzz:, this is probably just what 'the doctor would order' anyway. Enjoy!

Get a playmate for her :) That's what I did.. they entertain themselves when I'm too tired.. I know that is probably not the answer you were looking for lol Sorry

We just got back from our walk :animal37. Today will be a good day since I will get to be with Penny all day today, no work or school! :D

I play with Sandy for 20mins when I'm home from work. We usually play fetch too. When the man comes an hour later, the first thing he does is to give me a kiss then off he goes playing with Sandy until dinner is ready :p

When I get home Bud get's walked immediately for 20-25min. Then dinner for
both of us. I still feel guilty since he's been alone all day so I make a cup
of tea and sit on the floor and we have our chat time or play time for another 20 mins. I can't miss House Hunter's so I am in front of the TV
by 7:30. If he still fells energetic I throw his baby from the recliner into
the hall and he chases it. When he's tired he stops bringing it back to me
then I settle in for two more hrs before it's bed time.
I also play with him for 1/2 hr while having my wake up coffee from
6:30-7:00 after his breakfast and his first walk. They do exhust you
and it's rough when your beat in the evening when you come home.

I was at Costco the other day and they have these adorable puppets right now for the holidays. Well it's about 4 puppets for 8 bucks and I got the dinosaur set for Snickers. (They had all different kinds-bugs, polar animals, tropical animals, birds etc) While I watch TV, I just put on a puppet and he goes wild. Loves it, will even bring puppets to me to play with him. With the puppets, it never gets out of my reach, and keeps Snick occupied. His bite is not very hard so even if he gets my hand, it's padded with the puppet and it's ok, doesn't hurt and Snick thinks the dinosaur is alive. SO CUTE!! He even gets confused sometimes when I leave and the dino is not moving anymore. Then he beats it up and "kills" it and is satisfied.

omg, thats so funny because that thought goes through my mind every day.
Lexi sleeps all day so when i get home, shes just wants to be with me and just gooooo. and me,, im poooped out, exhausted... Yesterday, wasnt feelin well and they said to go home and i said heck no, i cant get rest home,, lexi is there lol... anyway i try to amuse her when i get home with throwing the toys, but shes really not interested,, she just wants food all night long..
Its too cold out to really walk her far, plus im soooo tired and just wanna veg out in front of the tv under my blanket. Its soo rough, especially being alone,(single) living alone.. Im the only one that has to amuse her and do everything else at the same time.. By 8pm Im shot, and just want to go to sleep, but i feel terrible for lexi..

I completely understand how you feel... All I want to do is veg and all she wants to do is play. Its tough. :rolleyes: Late at night when I get home from work I will toss around her sqeaky tennis ball for her for a while then its lights out :)

We've got 3 and someone is nearly always home with them during the day, but it seems when I walk in they all 3 want my attention. :p I take them all into the bedroom, shut the door, change clothes and then sit for a few minutes on the floor and just let them climb all over me. We'll play with a toy, have hugs & kisses, then we'll all get on the bed and I'll lay down for about a 20 min nap. Yogi has the most trouble napping, so sometimes I'll bring a toy up on the bed for him. But usually they'll all run around, over, on top of me and then find there places and lay down too. It took a little patience at first to ignore their pleas for play, but they have quickly learned that it's only for a short time. Then we'll get up and get on with our evening. I have found this works best from my kids and they seem to enjoy it now as much as I do. :)

I am as busy as you, I work and go to school also. (I should be doing homework now--haha) Brooklynn is the same way, she wants to run and play as soon as we walk in the door. I have started taking her to pick up my son from school, and she seems to really like that. In my area, we really can't walk safely. Plus, she is still really young. However, she and my boys love to run from one end of the house to the other. She still gets plenty of excersise. We also do the fetch thing, only it turns into two of us throwing it at each other and she follows it. I am sure you will both adjust. it will be nice to have him at school with you!

A walk is always good or if you have a backyard she can run in, all you have to do is let her out and watch her. Fetch is always a fun game for them. One of mine likes to be chased but I don't have to do much running - I just have to act like I"m about to run after him and he bolts off and when he stops, I just lunge towards him again. My favorite is tug of war - all you gotta do is get them interested and hold the other side... they do all the work :-)
