Pann's manood is at risk! Pann has started humping things  he is not quite four months. isn't this a little early?! I haven't decided whether or not to have him neutered yet, my bf is very against it he says it's not right  but he's just thinking of himself and has sympathy pains already lol. But I'm just not sure. I want to know all the pros and cons so that I can make an educated decision. I'm just nervous because he's already humping things and he loves people children and adults and other animals, he's never been aggressive towards anything or anyone! I don't want that to change! Please help me make this decision, I love my baby and all information and oppinions would be extremily appreciated! |
Yes, it is normal behavior. To neuter is good. Your research will help you to understand better. Your BF is thinking of himself:). |
Male dogs who are still intact are only aggressive towards other males and will mark for territorial purposes. It is completely up to you if you want to neuter you little guy. It makes me very frustrated when people shove their "OMG neuter your dog this second!" speeches down people throats. If you neuter your dog then thats fine, and if you don't then thats fine too.:) |
The decision is up to you but My opinion is if you arent breeding or showing it is best to neuter. Some reasons to neuter are uneutered males can mark, hump, wander and get testicular cancer. I just think it makes them a better pet |

Your rationale for not getting your Yorkie neutered is that "he's never been aggressive towards anything or anyone!" and the opinion of your BF.:rolleyes:No, I have not done extensive research on the topic, nor do I represent a statistically significant sample size, but you said all opinions are welcome so here is my experience after having owned 2 males and 1 female for many years... My current male who is a very sweet dog when he gets to know you is also aggressive at first encounter; he will nip at new people when they come in our house or on walks if I were to let him. He was neutered like my other one who was not aggressive to strangers at all. There appears to be no causal relationship per my experience, between neutering your pet and its aggression. Now is that scientific? No, but it is the truth with my 2 little males. I can also say that humping has not been a problem with my guys since they were little pups, even though it is supposed to be a sign of dominance and does not necessarily have anything to do with mating. That being said, there is some risk of a mess, or so I have heard, if you don't neuter, and of course the medical issues the vet will tell you about. I would be interesting to hear from owners (not breeders) that did not neuter and their experiences with that. If you never let your Yorkie out by itself not on a harness, which is the case for me, I think not neutering might be not be a bad thing, but you’d have to weight the risk of testicular cancer (and I don’t pretend to know what that is). I think not neutering would be more risky for some owners around my neighborhood, who let their little dogs out in the yard apparently unsupervised. |

Pro - won't try to escape the yard and possibly get lost trying to get to a female in heat - dog if loose or encounters stray dog will not add to the overpopulation of dogs in our society - less likely to mark territory inside the house - less to encounter testicular cancer (reasoning obvious) - less likely to encounter prostate issues - less likely to have aggression issues because of decreased testosterone Cons - may possible make your dog a touch more sedentary since the desire to mate is gone (debatable) - may cause possible weight gain since they are not spending energy to try and mate (debatable) - appearance (falsies available ) - may make your dog calmer and less aggressive (I don't see this as a con but thats me!) - for female dogs: spaying is a more invasive surgery then neutering The big con? Simply being against the idea of sterilizing an animal. People usually push for spaying/neutering because.... there really are very few cons (the real ones being weight - which is more or less an "old wives tale" since most dogs are spayed/neutered around maturity when they'd gain some weight. Many choose not to spay females because it does involve opening the abdominal cavity and its a much more invasive procedure. The flip side argument of course is that this invasive surgery would prevent possible issues with accidental litters and pregnancy.) The other big reason is because the amount of homeless pets is already so large combined with there being no "logical" reason not to its better to spay/neuter and not accidentally add to the 6-8 million homeless animals out there. I spay/neuter all my animals, because I feel for all the homeless animals out there and don't want to ever accidentally add to that because one of my dogs managed to get loose or a loose dog ended up in my yard. That's just me though. If you feeling that taking away an animal's ability to neuter is immoral - then thats another story. I just feel the benefits outweigh the risks. |
Thanks everyone! Thanks everyone for every opinion and info. I'm going to talk to the vet about it when we go back in within the next two weeks, and do more extensive research online. I haven't decided if I want to try to show him or not and whatnot, so I'm just kinda waiting to see how he grows (his one ear just won't stand up  ) he's my baby and right now I just want the best for him. Once again thanks all for the responses. |
I would never own an unaltered male dog. Literally every single male dog I've seen that is unneutered is a pain in the butt. I am frequently at the dog park and every dog that still has his "goods" is simply so concerned with mounting another dog, they can't even fun and play. I feel bad for 'em, honestly. Their instincts are going to make them want to mate twice a year and if they don't get to do that, it can drive 'em crazy. That's not to say an unneutered dog CAN'T make for a good pet but this is just my opinion. |
