Derby hit the 10 pound mark.
 

That's right.

Derby is now 10 pounds! He's now 5 months old and still teething!

All the small dog owners in the small dog park don't like him because he's "big" (i mean how big is a yorkie at 10 pounds anyway? he's still small!) and don't like him playing with them! while the big dogs love him, but he gets roughed up a lot. He doesn't seem to mind though, and takes it like a chap. But try taking him home early! I have to litterally drag him away because he's whining and pulling the "I don't want to go home mom!" attitude of dragging his feet.

I just feel like Derby is discriminated against because he's a "big" Yorkie. If he was any other kind of dog at 10 pounds, it wouldn't matter. I know that I don't care, and I love that I don't have to worry about him getting badly hurt. he can jump up and down on the couch, and do up and down the stairs and play with bigger dogs... but any time I come across a Yorkie owner, or some snob who says "he's SO BIG!" i feel partly ashamed of him.

Why do i feel like that? It's like having a fat overweight kid. I feel like it's my fault that he's not within standard, even though my husband sought out a bigger Yorkie.

I love Derby, but he's constantly out growing his clothes and I'm in that stage of parenthood where I feel like- will you just stop growing already? No one will want to play with you if you keep getting bigger!!

I guess I'm tired of going to socialize him and no other small dog except bigger dog (as puppies) will play with him.

I want him to FIT IN. The poor guy needs friends!!!!

Awwwww - we love Derby and who says he should be a certain size or weight. Obviously, the dogs don't mind... it is just us 'silly people' who set up these kind of standards that unless you are going to 'show' don't mean anything. Who is Derby anyway - is he kind, is he gentle, is he smart, is he a prankster.... tell us all about our beloved Derby!!

We have Franklin who is 11lbs and Maggie who is 9lbs! We are generally some of the smaller dogs at the dog park because the weight limit is 30lbs but I completely understand how you feel. We love having larger Yorkies because we lead busy, active lifestyles and they just are able to keep up with us. More Yorkie means MORE LOVE. Sending some teapot Yorkie love your way! :D

I WISH my Lola was bigger! How I would love for her to be even a few pounds heavier. Don't let people get you down. Next time a rude yorkie owner says something to you about his size say " Well at least mine is a DOG and not a TOY " LOLOL ;)

Razzle was still teeting at that age. You can bring Derby anytime to play with my 6 lb Razzle. 10 lbs is nothing . He plays with 100 lb dogs all the time at home

Thor is 4 lbs, but honestly, I would love it if he weighed ten. Even small dogs are usually twice his size. Even a six pound dog is significanly bigger. Once when I took him to the park, a Pomeranian tripped over him. Very big dogs sometimes think he's supposed to be a snack. Be happy with your teapot. :)

Also, small dogs get called "rats" and "fake dogs", so you'll get comments no matter what.

My first yorkie Barry was 17 lbs and over 16 inches high! I loved that dog to pieces - big or not! I know what you mean about fitting in, people always looked at me and said "he's not a yorkie."

His being different is what makes him special. Personally, I would try to explain to the small dog owners that while he's still a bit bigger he's still a small dog. Perhaps if you explain to them that you're concerned about him in the big dog pen because he does get roughed around since is a small dog (duh) they might understand? Perhaps if you still focus on the fact that he's still small and its an issue they'll get it.

There are so many pluses to having a bigger yorkie.. don't let them get you down! (I miss the surprise lap/couch jumps. Winston is just a tad tooo small for those.)

Derby's a good dog. He's still a puppy, so he acts like one. He can be a bit of a whiner, but it's only been more recently and I feel it's the teething?

He loves to chase, jump, and "wrestle" lol he sticks his paws up. He often goes into submission, but I'm trying to get him out of that! "Be a man Derby!" LOL! Some of the bigger dogs bite, so he bites back- that kind of thing. He can be nippy with us when he plays, but as soon as we say "No bite" he licks you! He listens well. He plays with you, how you play with him.

He plays fetch with himself! It's so cute.

He's a bit homely looking I must say. ;) He's groomed at home because my husband gave him quite the shave a few months ago, and we're trying to grow it back. We're waiting as long as possible to get it profressionally groomed! so aside from his hair being a little uneven, lol he loves attention like any other Yorkie!

I guess I'm just upset because I've been taking him out more and these dog owners have taken their "poor" little dogs away from him :(

GAIL---- I know I haven't gotten back to you yet! We were all trying to plan a meet but nothing has been set yet. Do fridays work for you? I have the next 2 off. It'd be nice to get Derby out to play with someone. As soon as Derby sees a Yorkie, he goes crazy! it's like they -know-!

They try to tell me he's "mixed", but we got him from a loving home breeder and while that's not "ok" to some people it was ok to my husband so it's fine with me. Derby's parents were very much Yorkie's as far as I can see. They have us send them pictures, and their little girl had a really hard time letting Derby go. She was in tears... poor thing.

The lap/couch jumps are so wonderful!

Derby does that at the dog park when he needs a break from the bigger dogs LOL! he finds a nice friendly lap to sit on and gets some love and attention. What a suck!

Is it possible that he does play a little roughly with smaller dogs? A lot of times bigger dogs hurt their small playmates unintentionally. I wouldn't care if Thor was playing with a ten pound dog, but if he was getting pinned a lot, or seemed scared, I might tell the owner than their dog is "too big". Also, sometimes really small dogs get freaked out by someone who is even a little larger than them, so even if your dog is mellow and friendly, other dogs might be scared of him. That is one thing that drives me crazy, when owners of German Shepard's or Rottweilers refuse to call their dogs off Thor, because their dogs are "friendly". I was at a yorkie meet the other day, and a couple people came by with large dogs, who probably were fine, but like 85% of the yorkies went batsh*t. Finally we had to tell them to leave - it was like, do you not hear the twenty-five yorkies barking at your dog?

Or maybe the owners are just too sensitive, I don't know, just making a guess.

And yes, according to a lot of people, "real dogs" don't weigh less than ten pounds, so there you go.

Derby continuously goes into submission. He runs up to a dog, and goes on his back with his 4 legs up waiting for playtime.

He does jump up, but he's not playing with 2-3 pound Yorkie's either. I don't often see Yorkies at the dog park, and it's very rare i do. I mean small dogs as in the 5-7 pound range (or more, but Derby normally stands taller).

Do you think it's the demographic of age in the dog's owner where discrimination lies?

Maybe it's ME. I'm almost 30, married, and Derby gets out a lot to play and run around. He's youthful, like us.

Some of the dogs seem like sissy's. (no offense to those out there!) and I don't understand why no one wants to play with him.

Sometimes I'd get snarky and tell 'em "I'll let the AKC know that you think his registration is invalid. I'll get back to you." People who claim things like that are just too ignorant to know better.

Yes he came from a home breeder, but he does have papers! The papers we have say Yorkshire Terrier, so- Yorkie he is to me!

And I should totally say that (CKC!) ha ha.

Jackson is a sturdy 12.5lbs at 1 year old and I love and prefer his size. Our dog park has some "bigger" dogs in the small dog section because I think it's allowed up to 25 or 30 pounds so he's never the biggest dog there. But I get the know-it-all owners who state, "He HAS to be mixed with something." As if they know my dog. Even if he is mixed, I don't care and I find it kind of rude for them to just assume such things. Jackson's best little friends are two 4-5lb Yorkies so size doesn't always matter! He gets along with them just like he does the "bigger" dogs.

I bet Derby is adorable. My Sophie Kate is a big rough and tumble kinda gal-- all 8 lbs of her.

Don't let the dog park people get to you, I have had so many people tell me that Sophie Kate is not a "good Yorkie" I ask myself what does that mean, she is a GREAT Yorkie to me.

I am so glad she is a little on the bigger side, she is sturdy as heck and can mix it up with the best of dogs.

I understand what you mean. Jackson loves to play, run, and wrestle and often gets irritated with tiny little dogs who won't even run or acknowledge his presence, lol. He's a total dogs dog and enjoys a good adventure. I think that's why he loves Nala so much because she's the first dog under 5lbs who gives it right back to him! LOL. She holds her own, wrestles him back!

Well...don't get discouraged! By the sounds of it I think Derby is 10 lbs of WONDERFULLNESS!! I bet he is adorable...Lucky is about 7.5 lbs and when people hear that he is a Yorkis they say "ohhh myyy he's a bit big for a Yorkie!!" I say that " he is a healthy Yorkie and I love him the way he is!!" You will always get comparisions from others...don't let it bother you....it's not their size that you fell in love with it's their personality....which is HUGE!! XO

As i try to tell my husband, he's not a teacup he's a d-cup. :d and the only teacup he fits in is the planter i got from walmart. When we got jj he was only 7 pounds, now a year and a half later he is 9 and a half pounds and his vet says thats a fine weight for a yorkie. Don't let anyone make you beleive he's anything other than full yorkie

First off let me tell you that Derby looks and sounds absolutly adorable, my kind of dog. As far as his size goes don't let those stupid people get you down. I get it all the time with my little Gizmo (notice how I said little lol) not only is he probably 16 pounds he is also a chocolate yorkie. So when people see him they tottaly freak out when I indeed confirm that yes he is all yorkie, I get the it can't be he's sooooo big, then they turn to Stellina and go there she's more in the norm( ha ya right little do they know little missy is anywhere between 8 and 10 pounds. no where near the norm lol) So if I'm on the mood to reply I just ask them if they knew that yorkies originally wheighed about 20 pounds therefor mine take after their antcesters, therefore all yorkie lol. Too bad we're too far because I'm sure my 2 would love to wrestle and tumble around toghether.

In defense of sissy dogs... Thor is definitely a sissy, but just like with people, it's bad doggy manners to keep trying to interact with someone who rebuffs you. I'm working on Thor's social skills, but he has been mowed over more than once by a small dog that's still twice his size, so I can see his point of view. It definitely doesn't help if a dog approaches him, and then refuses to get out of his space when he goes into full-on yappy lap dog mode. No means No.

I'm sure your guy is wonderful, though. :)

Derby goes from dog to dog to try and find someone to play with. He's not aggressive that way. He moves on if you don't play with him. He gets bored too easily.

I just got back from the dog park today, and he was going from big dog side, to small dog side. He was escaping through the fence! He was going where most of the "action" was! LOL!

We had a pretty good day today.

It seems Saturdays were far better than weekly day times. The owners are a lot nicer (regardless of age group), and the dogs seemed friendlier. Derby also seemed to have a lot more fun.

We got a lot of attention today because he got to ride in his back pack so Derby had a nice "ride"! Everyone thought it was cute. Most people commented on what a big Yorkie he was, but not in a negative way.

It was good to see him run around and play while being submissive as usual.

He also gave lots of kisses to the other dogs today too!

I guess I'll have to figure out what days are better to take him than others.

But you guys are right! he is a "dogs, dog!" Total playful pup.

Honey, I would not worry about what people say. I have had people tell me that my Max (who is an even 6lbs) is a "big" Yorkie... my Molly is even bigger than that.... so I just don't pay any attention to them. They think that ALL Yorkies are these little itty bitty handheld toys or something I guess. Its annoying to hear someone to make a comment about how big my babies are or something else like that... but it just goes to show how much they don't know! ;)

Be thankful that you have a bigger baby, you won't have to worry about him as much while playing, jumping, etc. My 5 month old puppy, Ginger, is 3lb 6oz and let me tell you, she scares me to death every time she jumps off the couch or is running up and down our stairs.
