Yorkie doesn't like toddlers?? Found out today mine 10 mo old yorkie doesn't like toddlers. She was fine with other kids, which were 3 1/2, 6 & 8 yrs. However, when the 1 1/2 came towards her, she would growl. Does anyone's do this?? |
my dog is not to fond of any little kids, im sad to say that I have not exposed her enough!!! my good friend has 2toddlers age 1 and 2 and laci hates when they are here!! I think they move to quickly and approach her to fast... my youngest is 14 and Laci loves her friends ! |
At least that makes me feel better, knowing she is not alone. My grand daughter will be 14 yr and Zhoie loves her and her friends to pieces. She has never been exposed to little ones either, and I feel she will not like them in the future. You are right it is kinda sad. I simply don't have anyone around with little ones. |
Lacie is just gorgeous! What a little baby...how old is she? |
Jackson's weird because the kids that he knows really well, he LOVES and will chase them, let them pet him, get near him when he's eating, and nothing bothers him whatsoever. Strange kids though are a different story... he gets very nervous when strange kids are fast moving, running, etc. He will bark at them sometimes! On the other hand, if we're at the dog park and there happen to be kids around, he's fine with them! I've found that he's more confident with people when he's around other dogs. |
Maybe I'm lucky. I just got my little guy a couple days ago (3 months old) and I've been exposing him to everybody. No problems with other dogs and no problems with people of all ages. I've been told this socializing is especially important with yorkies -- keeps them for yapping. Any truth to this? I was also told not to pick him up all the time, which is hard not to do. |
My 2 boys, 4 years old do not really like kids at all. They get nervous with ALL kids even my bf's son who is 16 years old makes them nervous. They do well around adults, all adults... they do not growl or bark or anything at kids though, just run away from them to me. If a child picks them up, they are really good, they stay still and let themselves be held. It's really cute, the child is soooo happy but the dog looks sooooo miserable! LOL |
toddlers we have 8yr triplet grandkids which we see several times a year. Abbey's not crazy about the boys..they "charge" her. the girl can hold and walk Abbey though! I take abbey for puppy play dates one a week with other yorkies..otherwise Im her only playmate! she's very social:) |
The yorkie is very smart to be afraid of toddlers. They can really hurt a small dog. I have lots of grandkids, and the toddlers are not allowed around the puppies. they pull their hair, squeeze their necks, drop them, fall on them. The older dogs know enough to stay out of their way. If you want to introduce your dog to the child. Have the child sit and then just let them pet the dog, and give the dog a treat. But toddlers are very scarey to small dogs. |

I have two daughters one is almost four and the other almost two. Our older 8lb yorkie does great with them and actually prefers children to adult. But she was raised with little ones, and is a bit bigger. Our little Mia who is four months old and is 3lb has a lick and dash method with our little ones and our friends (we have a lot of toddlers running around the house) I think it is a good idea to keep the little kids at a safe distance. Our girls are monitored closely and are very good with dogs in general. But when the other kids are not yours (and you can not discipline them) they may not have the proper respect for animals. I do think it would be good for you to socialize your yorkie with small children in a controlled environment for short periods of time. Good luck! hope this helps |
My Chachi who is 11 lbs is good with kids of all ages. My Jewels gets nervous around them |
Honestly I am all for her going upstairs and hiding under the bed I have to admit I am just as nervous as Laci !!!!! |
