Should I breed my furbabie?
 

She is 3lbs now and is 7 months old, so I am hoping she will get bigger. I would love to breed her cause she is such a beautiful and wonderful dog. She doesn't bark much unless she sees/hears something (she is an excellent watch dog). She is also very smart when it comes to obedience, and isn't aggressive at all. Her health is good and I have registered her and have a pedigree on her. She comes from AKC champion bloodlines. I know a couple of people who really want puppies from her. But I don't want to do it if it is going to put her in jeopardy. Please let me know all of your opinions. Thanks!

JMO, but any time you breed an animal it is putting them in jeopardy and taking a risk on their health. At seven months she is not going to get much bigger than her 3 lbs, so there is a good chance she is going to be too small to breed.

You've only been on YT for about a month. If you've spent time researching, learning, attending canine genetic classes, whelping and studied pedigrees and the standard.......and of course reading YT threads on those that have bred and the difficulties they've encountered you will definatly not even attempt to breed this wee one.

I'm sure you little girl is a beautiful and wonderful dog, just as you said. However, there are so many other factors to consider before making the decision to breed. She is not likely to grow anymore and is too small for breeding. Way too many complications with that size a girl, you could end up losing her.

Love her and enjoy her for the pet she was meant to be.

Love her, but please don't breed her. You are not a breeder because you'd know she's too small and if you are interested in becoming one you'd be doing serious research on breeding for a future Yorkie, and not asking this about your present Yorkie puppy.

Another thing is do you know for sure about her bloodlines. What type of breeder did you get her from. Not saying this to be mean about your baby, but there are many, many (too many) AKC registered Yorkies with claimed pedigree champion bloodlines, and that probably means nothing if you didn't really get her from a REAL reputable champion bloodline show breeder. I read "pedigree" or "champion bloodlines" in the sales ads everyday, everywhere. It's common and most of the time are lies.

I'm not saying yours isn't because your baby could be official. But if you are wanting to start breeding I'd advise to get an official healthy pedigree female for this purpose, AFTER you are prepared for the breeding business.

The couple of people you know who want a Yorkie because they admire (and envy LOL) yours so much, should go find them one. If she were my adorable well mannered baby, I'd tell them that.

Proper Breeding is something that takes a lot of research, time, and commitment. Proper care for the expecting mother can become quite expensive, and that is if everything goes well. Unexpected events will become even more costly and may endanger your girl as well as the puppies. Maddie also had a genetic eye problem that did not show up until she was 2. I hate to think about passing this on to more babies, b/c I wouldn't have know about it until a few litters later.:(
Please understand that I mean no offence, but breeding you little girl just because she beautiful and wonderful doesn't seem worth the risk. You have a beautiful and wonderful girl to enjoy so enjoy her.;)

I would like to add that when people say that there are Champions bloodlines in their pedigree - what you have to look at or ask is... how many generations back?

Was it the pups sire?
the grandsire?
the great-grandsire?

Was it the Dam?
the granddam?
the great-granddam?

I guess what I'm trying to say is... bloodlines are really something you have to know about to appreciate. You really need to know where the Champions are in his pedigree.

So right on Connie, there are so many breeders that say their pups come from Champion Lines....in truth how did they get these lines, did they get them directly from the breeder of those Champions or did they go via the backdoor (which is most likely what has happened). So many pedigree hunters that use this phrase "Champion Lines" to promote their puppy sales. When really most pet buyers don't care.....all they should care about is did this pup come from healthy stock and great representations of the breed. Did the pups come from a loving, caring breeder whose only concern is breeding healthy dogs and finding wonderful homes for their pups.

You are so right.....but, along with that there are other factors that fit into that equation. Bone type, long line of free whelpers, having ultrasound on her reproductive organs.
