Long car ride I'm going to visit my dad for Thanksgiving and its about a 6 hour drive each way. Capone hates the car. He sits in the seat tense as can be the whole time. He only gets excited when I turn the car off. Any suggestions on what I can do to ease the drive for him. He won't eat treats or play with toys because he's so tense. Please help, thank you. |
would a carseat help? Nala hated the car when we first got her. She would cry and yelp no matter what! She's getting better, but isn't a huge fan of the car yet. |
:( how stressful. I'd ask the vet about something to calm his nerves. Also, take Nutrical incase he gets car sick. Wishing you a stress-less, safe drive for both and a wonderful Thanksgiving. |
Please don't judge me for this idea, just tell me if it's good or bad. The vet perscribed him benadryl and I stopped giving it to him because it made him sleep so much. Would it be wrong to give him one before we hit the road, so he could sleep most of the trip instead of being so tense? |
I was going to suggest it myself. |
We put Sophie in a booster seat & you'd never know she was in the car. Clarence likes a deeper bed just on the back seat with a blankie in it. Keegan does what he wants...he likes the car. |
Maybe try taking him for little rides around the block before you go? |
Rescue Remedy is much better and a lot safer since it's all herbed based. Just give him three to four drops about 1/2 hour before you leave. Put him in a secure car seat and maybe he will feel better about traveling. |

But, I don't give it to her often as she is usually with my parents when I am gone. There is no harm in giving Children's Benedryl to a Yorkie if you follow doctor's orders. It does make them sleepy, and calms them down. I use a syringe to measure it out and your vet has them. Good luck! |
